"In this car, you travel in style. A British sports car largely designed and built for the American market, making it both a beautiful and comfortable road car. With the V12 engine, performance is never lacking when desired. This is not a bouncy sports car that speeds off but a stable force of nature unleashed. Fine original condition overall and in details, where everything appears to function well."

Description

Sold abroad in September 1990 and brought to Sweden in October 2003, registered for traffic in Sweden in April 2004. The first owner in this country kept the car for 20 years. Many of the miles driven have been long trips back and forth between homes in Stockholm and Spain. The current owner, a Jaguar enthusiast and mechanic, acquired the car through contacts with the first owner. The car is now newly serviced, inspected, and ready to drive. The car comes with two sets of keys and handbooks.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Starts easily and runs smoothly in both engine and drivetrain. A test drive at a moderate pace went steadily, with a slight imbalance in the front tires. Steering, brakes, and the automatic transmission appeared to function flawlessly. Not inspected on a lift, but everything that could be seen looked good. No comments from the vehicle inspection.

  • Interior condition:

Interior in Black Charcoal with fine wood details. Mild usage patina. Everything appears to function well, and the AC cools as it should.

  • Exterior condition:

A car in the rare color Jade Green Metallic, in fine condition. There is a small dent in the middle of the front fender between the wheel well and the door on the passenger side, which should be possible to pull out. There are also a few stone chips filled with paint on the rear fender edge. Glass, trim, plastic, rubber, and lighting details are in good condition. Some nicks on the headlight rims. Fine soft top with well-functioning electric mechanism. Engine and trunk compartments are in very fine original condition.

  • General condition:

This is a fast and impressive car in fine original condition, equally suited for the driveway, classic car meet, and country roads. It is an excellent driving machine and enthusiast's vehicle.

Facts about the model

The successor to the E-Type, introduced in 1975, initially struggled to take over its predecessor's iconic status. This was somewhat unfair, as the new XJ-S was a different kind of car, more of a Grand Turismo than a pure sports car, certainly appealing to the American market. Its design and lines made it look like a fast "road locomotive" even when stationary. Opinions were divided, but slowly and surely it became popular as a fast and comfortable Grand Routier. The V12, which was the only engine offered initially, was a powerful piece, though thirsty. Buyers could choose between a manual transmission (up to 1979) or an automatic. The manual transmission made a comeback when Jaguar also launched the model with a six-cylinder 3.6L engine as a complement to the large engine.

Initially, the XJ-S was only intended as a coupe, mainly because safety aspects in the USA and Europe phased out the joy and possibility of buying and driving a new open car. As always, the market ultimately decides, and after some time, a few open versions of the XJ-S were built through private initiatives. In the mid-80s, a Targa variant similar to the BMW Bauer and Triumph Stag was introduced, but buyers wanted even more wind in their hair.

Finally, from the 1988 model year, the XJ-S could be had as a proper convertible.

In 1991, a facelift included a modified rear end that matched the design of other Jaguar models. During this time and the following years, the engines were upgraded, with the six-cylinder growing to 4.0L and the V12 to 6.0L. In 1995, the latter engine and the XJ.S, now without the hyphen, were taken out of production. The following year, the six-cylinder variant was also discontinued. Jaguar then prepared to launch its successor, the XK8.

So, while the XJ-S had a slow start, it ultimately endured for over 20 years and was produced in 115,413 examples.
