"The restoration of this TGB 11 is of class and perfection. It is probably better than it was when new."

Description

During the renovation, Volvo's workshop manual has been followed in all instances. Original parts have been used, and where renovation kits from Volvo have been available, these have been utilized. The goal has been to upgrade the vehicle as close to new condition as possible.

The engine has been thoroughly renovated to new condition. All wearing parts and seals have been replaced. All rubber hoses, including molded ones, are new and original. The entire exhaust system is new, made of Ferritas stainless steel.

All wiring and cables are newly manufactured to original dimensions, color, cable shoes, and cable marking. Major electrical components in the electrical system are new, such as the ignition coil, distributor, batteries, charging regulator, lighting components, windshield wiper motors, and main power switch.

The gearbox and transfer gearbox have been disassembled, thoroughly inspected, and renovated, as have all other parts in the driveline.

The brake system is in new condition, renovated or new. The steering gear has been renovated with new bearings and seals. Linkage and all ball joints are new.

The frame has been sandblasted, painted, and internally rust-proofed. Shock absorbers and 8-blade springs both front and rear are new.

All parts in the body structure (that is of aluzink type) have been straightened (if necessary) and painted with the military's original color. All sealing strips around windows, doors, hatches, and between body parts are new.

Seats and rear seat have been reupholstered by a professional auto upholsterer.

Towbar and bracket for primarily a 50 mm ball. (Other towing devices can be applied according to Volvo's spare parts catalog and certificate accompanying the vehicle, and can then be approved for 3.5 tons). Snow chains in a well-packed bag are included. The vehicle is approved for 7 people.

Our assessment is that it is not possible to get closer to the renovators' goal than what they have achieved. Since the renovation was completed, the Volvo has rolled approximately two miles. For more detailed specifications, see the owner's comments.

Owner's comment

Description of our fully renovated TGB 11 "WYZ 477" In our renovations, we have adhered to the Volvo workshop manual in all respects. It is not possible to specify every detail in this extensive project. We have chosen to provide summaries and major components. Original parts have been used in renovations, and where renovation kits from Volvo were available, these have been used. Volvo's special tools have been used in all work. The project's goal has been to upgrade the vehicle to as close to new condition as possible. Our assessment is that we have achieved our goal as closely as possible. ENGINE: The engine has been thoroughly renovated to like-new condition. The entire crank mechanism has been balanced with an accuracy of one gram. All wear parts and seals have been replaced. The cylinder bores have been honed, and all pistons are new. Bushings for the piston bolts in the connecting rods are new. The crankshaft and main bearings are new. The cylinder head has been cleaned and lightly ported, valve seats have been reamed, valves have been ground, and the tightness between valves and seats has been checked. The oil pump in the oil pan is new. The fuel pump, pressure regulator, and coolant pump are new. The carburetors are new/reconditioned to like-new condition, with only the carburetor housings being non-new. The entire exhaust system is new, Ferritas stainless steel. All rubber hoses, including molded ones, are new and original. The hand throttle and choke controls have been restored to their original function. Since these engines have "split manifolds," both carburetors should be choked according to Volvo's recommendations, and this is the case in our engines. All parts have been inspected, and anything not in top condition has been replaced with new ones. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM AND INSTRUMENTS: All wires and cables are newly manufactured, adhering to original dimensions, colors, cable shoes, and cable markings. Major electrical components in the system are new, such as the ignition coil, distributor, batteries, charging regulator, lighting components, and windshield wiper motors. All wiring follows the electrical diagram for the new body (Aluzink). Renovated major electrical components are the generator and starter motor, which have been disassembled and checked, and all wear parts have been replaced. These components can be considered to be in like-new condition. The battery hood is new. Everything except the speedometer is new in the instrument panel. POWER TRANSMISSION SYSTEM: The gearbox has been disassembled, thoroughly inspected, and renovated. All bearings, seals, and synchromeshes are new. If wear on other parts has been observed, these parts have been replaced. Clutch assembly: The flywheel and pressure plate are new and balanced with the crankshaft, the clutch disc, pressure plate, release bearing, and clutch cable are new. Transfer case: Same as for the gearbox. Gear lever mechanism: All ball joints and bolts are new. Rubber mounts for gearboxes and rubber bellows are new. Driveshafts: No mechanical wear is present. The universal joints and bellows are new and original, as are all other replaced parts. Front and rear axles: The diaphragm in the vacuum unit for the differential lock is new, and other parts in the unit, including the unit itself, have new surface treatments (yellow chromate). The carrier in the center differentials is in like-new condition, and the seals are new. In the portal axles, all types of bearings are new, as are wear rings, support rings, packing boxes, and sealing rings, and the gear wheels have been inspected and found to be faultless; if faults are found, they are replaced. Front axle specifically: The bellows (seals between wheel gears and axles in general) and all parts related to steering pins are new. Controls for differential lock and front-wheel drive: These are new. BRAKE SYSTEM: Brake pipes are newly manufactured and routed exactly like the original pipes, and all nipples are new. All brake drums are new or in like-new condition, i.e., without any visible signs of wear. All drums are equipped with new brake seals. All wheel cylinders and brake shoes are new. The master brake cylinder and brake servos have been renovated for replacement. FRONT SUSPENSION AND STEERING SYSTEM: The steering gear has been renovated with new bearings and seals. Tie rod and all ball joints are new. FRAME AND SPRING SYSTEM: The frame has been sandblasted and painted, and after painting, the frame has been rust-proofed inside by a professional rust protection company. Shock absorbers and 8-blade springs both front and rear are new. All spring bushings and shock absorber bushings are new. BODY: All components of the body frame (that is of aluzink type) have been straightened (if necessary) and painted with the military's original color. Body parts are painted individually and then assembled, with all screw connections being new and green chromated. All sealing strips around windows, doors, hatches, and between body parts are new. All lock cylinders are new and have the same key number. Exterior wooden strips are new. Plexiglass windows in the rear body section have been replaced with tempered glass. Front and rear engine hatches have been renovated, with new insulation, straightened, and painted. Insulation in the roof, walls, and doors is new, with the hardboard over the insulation being new and green lacquered. Seats and the rear bench have been reupholstered by a professional auto upholsterer. Electric motors in the front and rear heater fans are new. EQUIPMENT: Towing hitch and console primarily for a 50 mm ball. (Other towing devices can be applied according to Volvo's spare parts catalog and certificate accompanying the vehicle, and can then be approved for 3.5 tons). Snow chains in a well-packed bag are included. The vehicle is approved for 7 people.
