"It's hard not to be touched by this car. A lovely open model with room for four and a deep rumbling V8 engine."

Description

This car was registered for traffic in Sweden on April 26th, 1938. The history after that is unclear (possibly taken over by the government during the war). After the war, on May 6th, 1946, it was registered again and received the registration number A23698, with the owner being an optician named Sjögren. One of his employees was allowed to use the car in the late 1950s, and on May 29th, 1964, he was able to buy the car. He continued to use it as a daily driver and enthusiast vehicle into the 1980s, when a Volvo Duett replaced it as the daily driver. The Ford has been used for countless holiday trips and participated in car meets over the years and is still in a drivable patinated condition today. It is a time capsule not only from the year of manufacture but also from how a car from the 1930s was kept alive year after year. Simply put, it is a piece of Swedish automotive history. According to information, it was originally dark blue, but it received a new color in maroon after bodywork repairs over 50 years ago. It might also be possible to research the early history through the National Archives. There are also many items in the car and with the owner, but it is unclear what they are at this time. Thus, it is an exciting "archaeological excavation" to see what can be salvaged.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

A genuine car that starts and runs as it should. Sure, it's from the 1930s and has mechanics from that era, but it's surprisingly smooth to drive. In recent years, it has been standing still, so a thorough check and service are recommended. But with that said, it seems to be in a usable and drivable condition. It was not lifted during the inspection, but from what could be seen, it was in good condition underneath. The older diagonal tires caused some sensitivity to tracks. The owner has maintained and taken care of the car over the years, and has made sure that it has been mechanically reliable and functioning well. There are upgrades such as the radiator, and reportedly a few extra horsepower under the hood.

  • Interior condition:

In large part complete and seemingly in original condition with some upgrades, mainly with additional gauges. Heating element works. Original radio, which was not in functioning order. Leather upholstery and carpets are patinated. Front seats have damage and front floor mats are missing.

  • Exterior condition:

The car was repainted many years ago in cellulose paint. A thorough rubbing and polishing can work wonders, as there are both cracking, small scratches, and dents. The chrome, glass, and other materials also have patina, so the overall appearance is consistent. The convertible top is intact and fully functional, of course manually operated. The engine compartment and trunk are in similar condition. There have been some modernizations, such as turn signals and reflectors.

  • General condition:

This car has received care and love for many years. The condition is patinated but it is largely original, roadworthy and a solid classic. Now it's time for the next owner to take over, as the third person behind the wheel since 1946.

Facts about the model

The big stock market crash hit the world in 1929, causing extravagance to take a big hit in the early 1930s. The luxury car segment and expensive solutions with large and fuel-thirsty engines faced major problems, brands disappeared and manufacturers slimmed down their offerings. That's when Ford struck and surprised competitors and the market with a V8 engine - the first in a smaller and low-priced car. It became a milestone in automotive history. Previously, it was mainly only Cadillac that offered such an engine. Henry Ford is said to have said: "Someone has to take a risk to get the business world's machinery going again."

The new engine was significantly shorter than the straight eights of the time and with that, it fit in a smaller car. The engine was a side-valve with 65 horsepower. When it came to Sweden, a four-door cabriolet cost almost 6,000 SEK. Already for the 1933 model year, a significant upgrade of the models came with the V8 engine as a major selling point.

During the 1930s, the economy picked up again and within the car industry, new and functional creations were developed. Even Ford had gained momentum, and new models and bodies came one after another. When some manufacturers entered into streamlined designs, Ford retained a slightly more streamlined model program, but they sold well. By the end of the 1930s, the sale of a Ford V8 was in fourth place in Sweden, preceded by Opel, Chevrolet, and DKW, but the V8 engine was a success.

By 1938, there were various model series. In the one called V8 De Luxe Series 81A, there was a wheelbase of 112 inches (285cm) and a 221 cu.in. engine, now with 85 horsepower. The bodies were Tudor and Fordor sedans, Phaetons, coupes with five windows, and a Club Coupe. In addition, there were some open cars in sedan and coupe bodies, as well as a convertible club coupe. In the Club Coupe versions, they had a full-fledged back seat. The De Luxe versions are recognizable by the new grille with a so-called tapir nose and a clipped and rounded grille along the hood, other moldings, chrome whiskers, and more luxurious interiors. Soon, however, the world had other things to think about, and the car industry switched to the production of war material.

The first type of V8 engine was produced by Ford from 1932 to 1953.
