Description

It was registered for road use in November 1987 and delivered by Rejmes Bil in Linköping to its first owner the same month. Five years and around 60,000 kilometers later, the current owner purchased the car. Today, it has 95,880 kilometers on the clock, which means about 36,000 kilometers have been driven since. The owner has serviced the car more frequently than recommended by the service book and official guidelines. The latest approved inspection was carried out on 2024-06-27.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The Renault engine starts easily, the clutch and gearbox feel healthy and solid, and all electrically operated functions work well.

  • Interior condition:

Normal wear consistent with the mileage, with fresh upholstery. The headliner sags in the typical fashion seen on many cars from that era. A thorough enthusiast-level detailing would enhance the overall impression of the controls and plastic trim.

  • Exterior condition:

Original paint in generally good condition for the mileage, with a small stone chip on the right-hand door. Older Gislaved tires with good tread mounted on nice original wheels, with a few minor marks on the right front rim.

  • General condition:

A fine example of the model with relatively low mileage, few owners, and a well-maintained history.

Facts about the model

The 480 was developed on a new platform that would later serve as the foundation for Volvo’s first front-wheel-drive models in the 400 and 800 series. To some extent, the 480 was used to test how these newly developed technical solutions performed before full-scale production of the 440 and 460 began. This, combined with the fact that the 480 featured a few more electronic functions, meant it experienced somewhat more teething problems than the 440 and 460 models, which were less affected.

The design of the 480 was a radical departure from previous Volvo models. It was aimed at the U.S. market, and it was decided that the car should have a low, sporty front. To meet U.S. legal requirements for headlight height above ground, popup headlights were chosen, which folded up from the hood. During daytime driving, daytime running lights were used in countries where required by law.

The front grille was placed below the bumper but still featured the diagonal Volvo slash that was a hallmark of all Volvo cars at the time. In 2006, the 480 was succeeded by the Volvo C30, which inherited several of the 480’s characteristic features—such as the glass tailgate (itself a nod to the P1800 ES) and the two-seat rear layout.
