"A car that has been well cared for by its owner and almost regarded as a family member. It was never intended to be a collector’s item, but was lucky enough to end up with the right owner – and now, 57 years later, it stands as a sort of anomaly in our throwaway society. Recently inspected with no remarks and ready to drive."

Description

The car was bought new by the current owner’s grandfather. His name was Felix Lövgren, and he lived in Långtjärn Vitå in Norrbotten County. On December 12, 1968, Felix picked up his brand-new Volvo 144. It was registered with the County Administrative Board under registration number BD 9103.

Under the hood was Volvo’s proven four-cylinder B18 engine, paired with a four-speed M40 gearbox. The car was also equipped with an optional fuel heater. Felix was extremely proud of his new car and took meticulous care of it. He had just turned 60 and bought the Volvo as a birthday present to himself.

His granddaughter Therese was six years old when he purchased the car and has since shared the full story with us. She often rode along in her grandfather’s prized car. As she grew older, she began caring for it herself — cleaning and polishing it until it gleamed. When graduation day came, the choice of vehicle was obvious: her grandfather’s 144 served as her ride.

Therese recalls that her grandfather made a weekly trip to the grocery store — a 20-kilometer round-trip — and once a year, he drove to the vehicle inspection station. He could choose between Kalix or Luleå, both 40 kilometers away. She vividly remembers that every Christmas Eve, he drove another 20 kilometers to visit his daughter’s family. He was so meticulous that he covered the car with a blanket while it was parked outside their house and used the fuel heater to ensure it was warm for the return trip. The car was used to being parked in a garage, and on Christmas Eve, it received a little extra care.

When Felix passed away in 1992 at the venerable age of 84, the car was inherited by his granddaughter. She immediately had it thoroughly serviced. The only rust discovered was around the splash guard mounts, near the spare wheel wells in the rear — this was repaired and rust-proofed (see photos of the trunk). Since then, she has driven it sparingly and continued to store it in a garage, just as her grandfather had. The car had about 87,000 km on the clock when she took it over and has only been driven 3,000 km since.

In 2012, she had a complete brake system overhaul performed. Among other things, the brake proportioning valves were replaced. The total cost of the brake service was 9,000 SEK, as documented in a saved receipt.

The car has been off the road for the past 13 years but is now newly inspected with no remarks and, under current Swedish vintage car regulations, exempt from future inspections. The owner notes that her late grandfather never drove on salted winter roads — and given the car’s condition, there’s every reason to believe that claim.

This is a remote auction. Photos and information about the car and its condition have been provided by the owner. BWA has not inspected the vehicle in person.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Easy-starting B18 engine that runs without issues.
Underwent a comprehensive brake service in 2012. We recommend a general service and inspection before driving longer distances. The fuel heater hasn’t been used since the 1980s and its functionality is uncertain.

  • Interior condition:

Very nice interior overall. There is a blemish on the passenger door trim — see photo.

  • Exterior condition:

Original paintwork in good condition. There is a small dent in the front bumper on the right side, as well as a minor dent in the chrome trim on the right rear door. Some stone chips and minor marks are to be expected given the car’s age and mileage.

  • General condition:

A truly impressive overall condition. The fact that low-mileage Volvo 140s still exist and have been cared for like this is simply remarkable. That said, it's important to keep in mind that the car is 57 years old and does show minor imperfections and some patina. As long as that’s understood, this car is sure to bring great joy to its next owner.
