Description

The Volvo 544 Sport was a popular but scarce model in the 1960s. After an extraordinarily comprehensive nut-and-bolt restoration, this car is in immaculate shape and has barely been used, providing an opportunity to relive the Sixties. A PV Sport was the late-seventies equivalent of a Golf GTI - a performance version of a smaller family car and a childhood dream for many. The B18D Sport version produced 90 horsepower (the same as the Porsche 356/912) and made excellent sound thanks to twin SU carburetors. The PV544 Sport now up for auction at Bilweb Auctions is marked with a "F," indicating that it is a 1965 model, the second last PV544 model year. It rolled out of the Lundby facility in Gothenburg on January 21, 1965, in the colour that the majority of Sport buyers desired: Cherry Red. It was a restoration object in need of corrosion repairs and a comprehensive mechanical overhaul as late as the summer of 2021. However, the original engine was present, indicating "matching numbers," which is crucial in classic cars. Two highly experienced gentlemen, both of whom had spent the majority of their working careers at Volvo, then chose to complete the flawless restoration. One of them was even a member of the team that constructed the final PV544 in October 1965. They spent approximately 6 hours per day working with the Sport till May of this year (in all more then 2000 hours). Everything was restored or replaced, and the list of what was done is three pages long.
With the help of a "K" camshaft, a sports exhaust, and a few more techniques, the engine's output was increased to roughly 135 horsepower. Skilled experts from the Volvo transmission factory in Koping repaired the gearbox and rear axle. Front and back suspension, all electrics, brakes, interior, and body were meticulously reconstructed using both restored and remanufactured parts.
Doors and wings were donated by a donor car from rust-free California. For practical reasons, the high/low beam switch was relocated to the steering column, and an inertia belt was installed for the front seats. It received its MOT in May, and the old Gothenburg registration, OA18821, was given a new registration plate. Since then, it has been driven around 500 kilometres to ensure that everything works well. And the circle is complete: the garage's first owner in 1965 lived just a few hundred metres away. And, of course, next to the Volvo factory.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The original engine has been renovated and increased to 135 horsepower, and it is a "matching numbers" engine, which is crucial in classic contexts. The car starts quickly, and the gears click in nicely, the brakes pull evenly, and the parking brake pulls up just enough.
There are no vibrations, creaking, or squeaking. The car appears to be brand new.

  • Interior condition:

Take a look at the pictures and imagine yourself driving a new car. When there was a barely visible crease at the back window for the first time, the headliner had to be replaced twice. All small details have been replaced or renovated, including the ventilation windows, which have been chromed. Professionals restored the speedometer, which now stands at 94,720 km on the original metre. We can't verify the extract original mileage.

  • Exterior condition:

Bodywork is rust-free and straight, with a perfect fit and no spackle. Body is fully repainted and in its original colour. A polishing and protective paint treatment could bring out even more lustre (tips for the next owner).

  • General condition:

The gentlemen, we believe, have completed an excellent renovation. Simply congratulate and thank you for your hard work. The interior of the car is just as appealing as the exterior and engine compartment. Everything is brand new. The first outing was on May 22 at the Tjolöholm Classic Car Show, where it drew a lot of attention. It was shaken down and adjusted, and everything worked perfectly.
