Description
This car was first put into service in the spring of 1968 and has since passed through a number of owners until it ended up with its current owner in Kumla. The car has been used frequently, participating in meets and other classic car events in the local area.
Nicely equipped with a leather steering wheel, 4-point harnesses, auxiliary lights, a spotlight, and a period-correct trip meter. The original seats, which were very worn, have been replaced with more modern bucket seats which we believe come from a Peugeot. The most recent inspection was carried out by the current owner in 2017. According to the owner, the engine has matching numbers and is, as far as he knows, in untouched original condition.

Mechanical condition
The engine and gearbox work satisfactorily, as do the brakes. Large parts of the brake system have been replaced during the current owner's time. JP Slotmags are fitted with tires in acceptable condition. The original wheels and winter wheels are included. There is a crack in the pre-heating pipe, and the oil pressure gauge is not connected. The steering wheel lock does not work, but a start button and a safety cut-off switch are fitted. Otherwise, everything works, including all technical functions such as lights, turn signals, horn, etc.

Interior condition
Interior in used condition. Seats replaced as previously mentioned and these are in nice used condition without damage. Somewhat worn floor mats and door seals. Trip meter and map reading light installed (see pictures). Headliner ok except at the rear towards the rear window. The sun has likely taken its toll and caused cracks. 4-point harnesses are fitted, but the original seat belts are also included.

Exterior condition
Minor blemishes such as surface rust, stone chips, and scratches are present. However, the car is straight and clean in its bodywork without any significant dents. The windshield is somewhat worn, though without any major stone chips. Chrome and window trim are in usable condition. The bull horns for the front bumper are included. Rust is present in the rear section of the floor and possibly in one or two other spots. The car has not been inspected on a lift by us.

General condition
A charming retro Beetle with all the right attributes. Creates a bit of rally magic wherever it rolls. There is room for improvement regarding some rust for those who wish.

Facts about the model
Most people probably know the history of one of the world's most successful car models, the Beetle. Below is some fun rally history.
The Volkswagen Beetle (Type 1) has a rich and successful motorsport history, despite originally being designed as an affordable people's car and not a sports car. Its robust construction, rear-mounted engine (which provided excellent traction at the rear wheels on slippery surfaces), and reliability quickly made it a favorite in the forests during the 1950s, 60s, and 70s.
The Early Years and the Monte Carlo Rally (1950s and 1960s)
As early as the 1950s, privateer drivers began achieving great success in tough long-distance events.
Successes: The Beetle took class wins in legendary competitions such as the Monte Carlo Rally, the Swedish Rally (the Midnight Sun Rally), and the grueling Safari Rally in East Africa.
Characteristics: Because the engine sat behind the rear axle, the rear wheels were pressed down into the ground. This gave the Beetle an enormous advantage on snow, ice, mud, and gravel compared to the front-wheel-drive or heavier rear-wheel-drive cars of the era.
The Golden Age: Porsche Salzburg (1970s)
It was during the early 1970s that the Beetle's rally career reached its absolute peak through the Porsche Salzburg team in Austria (led by Louise Piëch, daughter of Ferdinand Porsche).
The models: They used the most technically advanced versions: the VW 1302S and later the VW 1303S (with more modern McPherson strut front suspension).
Performance: The cars were heavily tuned. From the original 50 hp, factory tuners extracted upwards of 125–135 horsepower from the air-cooled boxer engines. They were equipped with disc brakes, reinforced chassis, and five-speed gearboxes.
Historic victory: The high point came in 1973 when Günther Janger drove a Salzburg Beetle to a sensational overall victory in the Austrian Alpine Rally, which at the time was part of the newly established World Rally Championship (WRC).
The Volkswagen Cup in Sweden
In Sweden, the Beetle became enormously important for grassroots motorsport. In the early 1970s, the Volkswagen Cup was launched, a one-make rally class where everyone competed on equal terms in VW Beetles. The cup became a breeding ground for scores of Swedish rally talents and made motorsport accessible to enthusiastic amateurs thanks to inexpensive, easy-to-work-on cars.
Rallycross and the "Atomic Potty"
The Beetle also made the leap to the rallycross tracks.
During the 1970s, extremely modified Beetles were raced in the European "Division 3" class. The cars had fiberglass bodies, extremely wide tires, and ferociously tuned engines.
They became crowd favorites and were popularly known as "Atomic Potty" (or atompottor) because of their feisty sound and rounded appearance.
The Legacy Lives On
Although the Beetle was retired from top-level international competition in the late 1970s when the Golf took over, it never died out. Today, the VW Beetle is one of the most popular cars in historic rallying (Appendix K) across Europe, where it still delivers a wonderful engine sound and wide slides through the forest.
