Description
The car has largely been restored to its original condition, as it was when it served in Haparanda. However, the car bears marks from its life as a patrol car, i.e. minor blemishes on the bumpers and interior as well as minor dents.
About the car's radio equipment:
Originally, the police radio system 70 (S70) was fitted in the car. In the late 1980s, this equipment was replaced nationwide with the more modern Ericsson C-602. It is uncertain whether this particular patrol car was still in service for that changeover. During the car's restoration, a modified radio system 70 (known as S70M) was installed. Today, the car has an original police Ericsson C-602 in the lower radio compartment with the correct code memory (call sign 70 400). The radio is fully functional. On the left rear fender sits a correct police radio antenna with spring whip on a ball-joint mount. As a demonstration piece, the car also has radio system 80 (S80) fitted in the upper radio compartment. The unit is an Ericsson C-605 (not original), but has an original front panel with the correct keypad. The radio powers on and displays the channel, but needs servicing. The car also has an S80 antenna mounted on the roof bar. The antenna is not connected, but can be modified for full functionality via the roof feed-through. The handset holder in front of the radio is also a standard C-600, which is not connected.
About the engine bay:
Since the car served in government duty stationed in Kiruna, it is naturally fitted with an auxiliary gasoline-fired heater. It is complete and untouched, but not tested. We advise against testing it without prior servicing by a technician due to the fire risk. The original relay and fuse box for the police equipment remain, though disconnected with some cut wires. This can be restored. A separate, simpler fuse box and relays are temporarily fitted for the radio equipment and switches.
About the appearance:
The car has the same appearance as when it served in the 1980s.
Correct Trafyr roof bar with Pintsch Bamage rotating beacon fitted. The lettering on the hoods and doors is newly made, according to the original specification.
Klaxon air horns mounted behind the grille with correct protrusion; compressor not fitted.
There is rust in the spare wheel wells and the rear lower body panels. The owner includes repro replacement panels/spare wheel wells.
The following items are included loose:
Baton tubes for mounting on the side of each front seat. Flashlight holders for mounting on each front door pocket. Handcuff case for mounting on the right door pocket. A Klaxon Sonabel compressor for the siren, in need of servicing, is also included loose.
To do:
Servicing of the rear axle or gearbox (there is a transmission noise, see and listen to the video)
Minor hole in the right rear door panel.
Minor hole in the upholstery on the back of the passenger seat.
The upper left section of the driver's seat has minor dry cracks. Rust repair of the spare wheel wells, plus a small section of floor under the passenger seat (repro panel included).
The car has covered just over 320,000 km since new. A full binder with inspection reports, service book and other history accompanies the car.
NOTE! The car is delivered with the blue rotating beacons disconnected, as these may not be used on public roads.
This is a remote auction. The photos and the information about the vehicle and its technical condition have been obtained from the owner. BWA has thus not inspected the car in person at the seller's location.
Technical data
Condition
-
Mechanical condition
B23E 2.3-liter fuel-injected engine producing 136 hp. The engine has been serviced with oil, filter, spark plugs, and ignition wires. It runs well and is lively. The gearbox is an AW55, 3-speed automatic. Gasoline-fired heater with timer in the dashboard (not tested). The car has undergone a complete brake overhaul since 2021, with new brake calipers, brake discs, hoses, etc.
There is a transmission noise that can be heard when driving the car calmly and gently; we are not sure whether the noise comes from the rear axle or the gearbox. The noise can be heard at the end of the video. -
Interior condition
Remarkably nice inside considering it served as a radio patrol car.
The front upholstery is original plush, the rear seat reupholstered in the correct vinyl with correct stitching. The carpet is the correct rubber type, with additional floor mats.
The front seats have the original police headrest extensions. The rear doors have "prisoner locks" with smaller door knobs and release buttons on the front doors, function uncertain.
Larger police dome light, of the type also fitted in taxis, with a switch on the left side of the steering column cover. The center console houses the switches that were specially developed for police vehicles. The "Radio 1 – 2" switch is connected to the two communication units. The so-called "crutch" handle and the indicator light for the rotating beacon/siren are in place. The "Stadsljus" (city lights) switch is in place, though not functional. -
Exterior condition
The paint is in patinated, usable driver condition.
Three of the doors have been replaced and repainted. The fenders have also been painted white. Otherwise, the exterior is relatively untouched, which means scrape marks on the bumpers as well as minor scratches and blemishes. New windshield. There is some rust on the outside of the left drip rail. There is rust damage in one spot in the floor, as well as in the spare wheel wells. This has been approved by the Swedish vehicle inspection, but repairs are required to make the car truly nice. Replacement sheet metal is included.
Volvo steel wheels with center caps and new summer tires 185/70-14. Please study the photos and the video carefully to form your own opinion of the condition. -
General condition
A very rare version of the classic Volvo 240. The car is in inspected and functional driver-quality condition.
