"Here we have a car that was used as a daily driver while being so well cared for that one day it suddenly became a classic without anyone even noticing. The car has been rustproofed over the years, otherwise it would not be in this fine condition. Our assessment is that continued maintenance and moderate summer use is a good recipe for this station wagon. If the buyer addresses the existing body dents and has the car fully repainted, it would become a real gem. Be sure to watch the video we made during the test drive; it gives a good picture of the car's condition."

Description

Within the classic vehicle hobby, a distinction is made between restoring and repairing. A restoration is more comprehensive and often ends with the car sitting half-finished in pieces for a long time, before the work is completed or the project is passed on to the next enthusiast. Repairing means, just as it sounds, fixing only the part that has broken.

This station wagon has had owners who maintained the car and repaired it when needed. There is a philosophy that says you should not fix what is not broken. Consequently, it has never been restored — it simply has not been necessary.

It has had seven registered owners since new. The current owner bought the car in 2021 out of pure nostalgia. When he was growing up, these small, handy station wagons were common family cars. With few exceptions, all of the owners have kept the car for a long time. One owner had the car for 29 years, another for 14 years, and the current owner has had it for 5 years. The odometer reads 94,630 km. We cannot guarantee that the mileage is correct since the car was new. A number of inspection records have been saved, the oldest from 2009. According to these, the mileage is correct from 2009 onward. The alternative would be that the odometer has rolled over once and that the car has actually covered 190,000 km. The question is whether the car would have been this intact after that distance?

The current owner commissioned a brake overhaul, including new rear wheel cylinders, in 2024. Also a new fuel pump etc.

The car comes with a spare wheel, owner's manual, and a number of inspection records from the Swedish vehicle inspection. 2 set of keys is included with the car.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

Equipped with the classic V4 engine developed by Ford in Germany, here in Saab configuration with 1.5 liters and 75 hp. The engine starts nicely and the gears engage smoothly, once you have gotten used to the column shift lever. The car runs steadily on the road with normal function of the brakes and the special freewheel, which was a Saab specialty. There is some oil seepage on the underside of the engine.

  • Interior condition

Fine interior, apart from a small hole on the back of the driver's seat. Missing the original textile carpeting. Original rubber mats in good condition. Good headliner. Extra child seat in the rear.

  • Exterior condition

The body is straight and solid. We do not believe the car has had a complete repaint, but there are quite a few paint touch-ups around the body, giving the paintwork an uneven tone. The paint has also been polished through in a few spots. There is pinch damage along the lower left side of the body. Otherwise, there are some scratches and one additional minor dent. The car's undercarriage appears well preserved.

The front end around the grille and lights has surface rust spots from stone chips. The chrome is in good driver condition. The trunk lid handle works but needs attention. Fitted with older tires with acceptable tread depth. The left front wheel is of an older type; the correct wheel is included as the spare.

The mounting for the right rear splash guard needs attention. Please study the photos and video carefully for more information about the car's condition.

  • General condition

Unusually good condition for a driver-quality, unrestored Saab 95. There are some flaws, but this is a genuine car. Can be used as is or restored.

Facts about the model

Saab originated from the engineering collective at the aircraft manufacturer in Linköping, led by Sixten Sason in the 1940s. The prototype of the Saab 92 (92001, "Ur-Saaben") was shown to the company management in Linköping on June 4, 1946, and series production began on December 12, 1949. The output at the time was a breathtaking 25 hp at 3,800 rpm. The Saab 96 was manufactured between 1960 and 1980. Before the V4 engine, which originated from Ford, began to be installed in the 96 in 1967, they were equipped with a three-cylinder two-stroke engine.
