"A premium car from the final year of the W108 in Europe, when the model was topped off with a 3.5-liter V8 and a four-speed automatic. Offered here in a used but well-maintained, driver-ready condition with some details to attend to."

Description

This car was registered for road use on October 10, 1971. The current owner took over in May 2017. He has driven it as an enthusiast's car and primarily focused on the mechanicals. In addition to this mechanical work, it has been serviced and gone through with oil and fluids, new spark plugs, filters, ignition wires, and rotor. The rubber-based hydropneumatic system at the rear needs attention. The current owner has purchased new shock absorbers and springs to replace the original system, and these are included. The new owner can drive it as is, replace the system, or restore the original setup. The odometer reads 59,700 km, and at the 1989 inspection it showed 49,050 km. It appears to have covered just under 10,000 km since then. However, it is likely that the odometer rolled over once before that, so the mileage is believed to be 159,700 km.

The car is insured through MHRF, and it comes with an original owner's manual as well as various documents, including inspection records from 1989 onward. The car is equipped with a tow hitch. Inspected "for all time" under current regulations.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

Starts easily and ran well in terms of engine and drivetrain. During a short test drive in a residential area, everything worked well, including steering, automatic transmission, and brakes. Jerked slightly at low speed. Not checked on a lift. However, minor traces of rust could be seen underneath in seams at, among other places, the front wheel housings. The car is rustproofed, but it is unclear how long ago. Much of the mechanical components have been gone through in recent years, including: new fuel pump, replaced steering gear, new alternator, new battery, and new stainless steel exhaust system. The calipers have also been overhauled and new front brake pads fitted.

  • Interior condition

Appears to have the original interior in good usable condition. The front seats have been reupholstered on the seating surfaces. Fine comfort in the seats and rear bench. Nice door panels, headliner, and textile carpets (rubber protective mats). Steering wheel, controls, gauges, and dashboard in fine original condition. The wood trim in the dashboard is in good condition, while the sections along the windshield are more patinated. All electrical functions appear to work, including the operation of the sunroof. A fine period-correct Becker radio as well as a freestanding cassette player on the passenger side, the function of which is uncertain. Trunk in good condition.

  • Exterior condition

Good, well-maintained paintwork with normal wear from use and some minor signs of rust (blisters) on the A-pillar on the driver's side. One paint chip on the hood on the same side. The fender edges and lower edges have areas that need attention. Wheels and tires in used condition, one hubcap is missing. The engine bay is in original condition with wear from use and some signs of rust. The sound insulation has partially deteriorated. Chrome, trim, emblems, and lighting details in original condition with some patina from use.

  • General condition

A classic executive car for those who wanted to indulge in the luxury of the era and drive a true highway cruiser. This example was sold new in Sweden, where it was anything but a common sight on our roads – it was reserved for the privileged few. It has been used and there is work to be done, but the new owner can set their own level of ambition. The current owner has addressed a good deal of the mechanicals and driven the car. For those who wish to return this car to its former glory and also address the cosmetics, here is the chance to acquire a luxury car from Stuttgart from the turn of the 60s/70s – a fine classic and enthusiast's car with collector potential.

Facts about the model

The W108 was introduced in 1965 and became a smoother and more timeless car than its predecessor, the so-called "Fenmercan" (Fintail Mercedes). Much of the technology was carried over from it, however, with a new rear axle and larger base engines as the only differences. In the first year, the W108 was available as the 250S, 250SE, and 300SE. At the end of 1967, the 250 and 300 were replaced by the 280S and 280SE. In parallel, the longer 280SEL version was introduced. In March 1971, the 280SE 3.5 and 280SEL 3.5 with V8 engines were added. These luxury cars marked the culmination of the W108 era. They featured electronic fuel injection with a Bosch D-Jetronic system producing 200 hp and were most often delivered with a four-speed automatic gearbox. By September 1972, when production ended, a total of nearly 360,000 examples had been built.
