Description
The current owner purchased the BMW 20 years ago from an acquaintance in Södertälje. At the time, the car was in need of restoration, and work began with great enthusiasm. Unfortunately, other priorities intervened and the project eventually came to a halt.
As a result, the car has remained largely untouched for the past 18 years, with the exception of the frame, which was restored a few years ago.
The microcar has been dropped from the vehicle registry during the years it has been off the road. A certified copy of the old registration certificate from Riksarkivet (the Swedish National Archives) is included. If the car is to be registered in Sweden again, it will need to undergo an origin verification with the Swedish Transport Agency and then pass a registration inspection. Study the photos carefully to see what is included with the car. Expect that certain items will need to be sourced.
This is a remote auction. The photos and the information about the vehicle and its technical condition have been provided by the owner. BWA has thus not inspected the car on site at the seller's location.
Technical data
Condition
-
Mechanical condition
The engine is completely disassembled and needs to be rebuilt. The muffler is missing, as well as the choke control on the carburetor housing. We do not know if anything else is missing from the engine. Please study the pictures carefully. The brakes are disassembled and need new brake shoes and wheel cylinders, etc.
-
Interior condition
The seat, backrest, and floor mat are missing. The upholstery on the door and side panels is also missing. The sunroof frame is present, but it needs new soft top fabric. The speedometer, ignition lock, and switches appear to be in place.
-
Exterior condition
The body was restored and repainted 20 years ago. Unfortunately, surface rust has begun to appear in the body seams, along with some paint lifting in places. There is a dent on the door that occurred during storage. The owner recommends that the buyer repaint the entire body to bring it up to top condition. The frame for the sunroof is included, but it needs new soft top fabric. New tires were also fitted 20 years ago and have not been driven on since. The frame has been fully restored with all bushings, bearings, etc. replaced. Restored front suspension with new bushings, bearings, and seals, as well as a restored rear suspension. Restored chain case for the transmission. New shock absorbers front and rear.
-
General condition
A stalled project. The body sits loosely on the fully restored frame, secured with only two bolts for transport purposes. The microcar needs to be completed and then undergo an origin verification as well as a registration inspection. Study the photos carefully for more information.
Facts about the model
In the first years, the car was only available as a four-wheeled variant. The rear axle lacked a differential, but since the rear wheels were positioned quite close together, this was hardly noticeable. The four-wheeled model was registered in Sweden as a car and therefore ended up in a difficult competitive position – few were sold.
From the launch of the three-wheeled version in 1959, only this version was sold in Sweden, as the customer base became entirely different, namely older Swedes who had obtained motorcycle licenses in the 1930s, when few could afford a car. The comfort of an enclosed motorcycle was now appealing as the economy improved, without the hassle of having to upgrade their driver's license. This customer group had nothing to choose from when all motorcycle car manufacturers ceased production around 1964, so their only option was to keep the motorcycle car they had running for as long as they were able to drive. Sometimes well into the 1970s–80s, when collector interest in these vehicles awakened. Hence a comparatively higher survival rate of motorcycle cars in Sweden than in other comparable European countries.
