"A PV in wonderfully genuine driver’s condition. The car looks as it did when the first owner put it in the garage in 1974. inspected in 2022 and, under the current veteran regulations, approved indefinitely. Road ready."

Description

This PV was sold under the name “Standard,” which was a simpler and cheaper model that, among other things, lacked chrome trim and a cigarette lighter. In this way, the buyer saved 575 kronor, as a Standard cost 8,500 while a Special came to 9,075 kronor. The car was purchased new in 1954 by Bernt Jonsson, residing in Vindeln, Västerbotten County. It was assigned registration number AC 19436. Mr. Jonsson used it as his daily car until 1974, when it was put into garage storage. In 1989, the current owner heard about the car and acquired it. He explains that he likes the “basic model” without chrome trim, as the body lines are better highlighted without them. In 1991, the car passed inspection after having been off the road for 17 years. A few years later, it was deregistered again due to lack of time—the owner had other vintage vehicles to drive. In 2022, it was brought out once more, fitted with new tires, and inspected again. In 2024, the car was taken to Bromscenter in Umeå, where the entire braking system was completely refurbished at a cost of 26,000 kronor. The odometer shows 14,570 km. If it has turned over once, the correct mileage would be 114,570 km; alternatively, it could be two turns and 214,570 km. We are uncertain which is correct. The engine is a replacement unit and, according to the owner, has only run 70,000 km. Since the most recent inspection in 2022, the car has been driven about 700 km.

The car is now being sold as the owner has several other vintage cars and wishes to scale down his hobby.

Included with the car are the old county registration plate, a box of spare parts, as well as a spare wheel and the original jack.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Equipped with a B4B engine and 3-speed gearbox with unsynchronized first gear. 6-volt electrical system. Starts and runs well. The gears shift smoothly once you’ve learned the trick of either being at a complete standstill or double-clutching when engaging first gear.

The current engine is a replacement unit installed by the first owner and has covered 70,000 km to date. The braking system was completely refurbished in 2024 at a cost of 26,000 kronor (receipt included). New tires were fitted in 2022.

  • Interior condition:

When the car was brought out in 1989, it was discovered that the first owner had fitted seat covers. Not just one, but three layers of seat covers were installed on top of each other. This explains why the original seat upholstery is in such fine condition. The interior, apart from the black rubber mats, is original from 1954. There is a hole in the headliner at the left C-pillar, but otherwise the interior has withstood the test of time remarkably well. See pictures. The steering wheel is free from cracks, which in itself is very unusual. In the luggage compartment there is some surface rust and a rust hole at the very rear near the trunk opening.

  • Exterior condition:

Original paintwork with touch-ups. There are stone chips, a few minor dents, and some minor surface rust. Look carefully at the pictures for the condition of the car's body. Bumpers and grille are in used condition. Crack in the windshield on the driver’s side. On the underside, we recommend a thorough rustproofing/oil treatment. See pictures.

  • General condition:

A very charming and authentic PV that has never been restored, only cared for and used. It carries the marks of its years of use in a dignified way.

Owner's comment

The engine was replaced under warranty by Volvo sometime in the late 1950s or early 1960s and according to the first owner had only driven 7,000 km when I bought the car. There was a sticker on the trunk lid with the Swedish symbol and what is visible is the sticker adhesivet hat has reacted with the paint. I have not had the trunk lid touch-up painted, as this small defect is part of the car's history.

Facts about the model

The PV 444 is a classic Volvo that has filled countless pages of writing. It was first unveiled at Volvo’s exhibition in the Royal Tennis Hall on September 1, 1944. Many suspected that the Second World War would soon be over, and Volvo wanted to be ready to launch when peace finally arrived. However, it would take until early 1947 before cars could start being delivered. With its new family car, Volvo also initiated exports—primarily to neighboring countries, but eventually throughout Europe, the USA, and the rest of the world. A total of 196,005 units were produced before production ended. By 1957 the new Amazon had been introduced, and the following year the 444 was upgraded to the 544 model.
