"An elegant exterior and a reliable heart in the form of the B21 engine with mechanical fuel injection make this a near-ultimate version of the Volvo 240 from the 1970s."

Description

The current owner purchased the Volvo in 2010 and began a rolling restoration with the goal of keeping it drivable every summer. The car underwent extensive rust repairs and was professionally repainted. The interior was intact but required cleaning by a detailing company. The entire rear suspension was dismantled, and the bushings in both front and rear were replaced during the restoration. The alloy wheels were sandblasted and powder coated.

By autumn 2014 the restoration was complete, but in recent years the car has been driven less and less. Over the past 15 years, it has covered only 5,000 km, and the odometer currently reads 268,260 km. After being stored since July 2023, it was recently taken out and inspected at the beginning of September. At that inspection it received remarks for a non-functioning windscreen washer and a binding left front brake. A recheck at a workshop or inspection station must be carried out by October 3; otherwise, the car will be prohibited from road use. The inspection also noted, as an advisory, rust on the left strut housing, so replacement may be advisable.

A binder of receipts and inspection reports accompanies the car, along with the original owner’s manual and service booklet, filled in up to 60,000 km, supplemented by the extensive documentation in the owner’s binder. The car has also been featured in the magazine Klassiker. A box of spare parts is included in the sale.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Starts easily, and the engine ran smoothly during the test drive. The gearbox with overdrive showed no issues on the road test. The Volvo performed well both at low speed and at highway pace; the only sign of a slightly dragging front brake appeared when parking the car. The owner states that it can sometimes be a bit difficult to restart when the engine is warm, which he believes may be due to a leaking injector. The steering wheel is slightly off-center, and a small vibration can be felt while driving, most likely from an imbalance in the driveshaft. All electrical functions work except for the washer pump. The radio in the car is correct for the model, but no speakers are fitted. Two ignition keys and four trunk keys are included.

  • Interior condition:

Comfortable velour upholstery in good condition. The underlying fabric carpets and rubber mats are also in good shape. The headlining is generally fine, though the section on the sunroof panel has some stains. The front interior door handles show some wear, as does the velour on the driver’s door panel. The front doors are missing the plastic mirror covers, and in the luggage compartment one panel at the front, toward the cabin, is missing. The luggage area is otherwise clean and tidy. Tool kit, jack, and spare wheel are included. The spare wheel wells are solid but were repainted during the restoration in a finish that does not exactly match the original.

  • Exterior condition:

The Volvo 244 GLE makes a very good overall impression with its glossy metallic paint, applied by Ingarvets Lack in Falun. There are a few minor paint imperfections, and rust bubbles are visible on two of the doors. The bumpers show signs of aluminum corrosion. A detail often overlooked in restorations of the 240 series is spot welding on the rear wheel arch edges, but here this has been correctly carried out by Falu Bilplåt.

  • General condition:

A nicely restored 240 of a rare and attractive model year and version. Requires a few minor measures after its years in storage before being ready for regular use again.

Facts about the model

Volvo 240 GLE: Model History
For the 1979 model year, Volvo’s 240 series underwent a major update with a redesigned front and rear. The new top version of the 240 range, the GLE, borrowed its name from the six-cylinder 264. At that time, the Volvo 244 GLE and 245 GLE were the most luxurious four-cylinder models Volvo offered.

Like the GL, the GLE was fitted with the rectangular headlights from the 260 series, and at the front a painted spoiler was standard. For the 1979 model year, the GLE was equipped with the B21 engine with fuel injection and a four-speed gearbox with overdrive. Metallic paint and alloy wheels were standard. Inside, the car featured velour upholstery and a leather gear lever gaiter.

In the summer of 1979, a 244 GLE cost SEK 59,900 compared with just SEK 45,200 for the entry-level four-door 244 DL. After only one year, the 244/245 GLE disappeared from the Swedish market, only to return in 1983. At that point, the model shared its engine with the GLT versions but was positioned more towards luxury and comfort. In January 1984, the GLE disappeared again when the 740 GLE was launched, only to reappear once more in 1989 as an equipment package. Model year 1990 marked the end of the 240 GLE.

The Volvo 240 was produced from August 1974 to May 1993, and of the 2,685,171 examples built during its 19-year production, the 240 GLE remains a rare version.
