"It’s hard to get much closer to as-new condition than this."

Description

In 1976, this Vespa moped rolled out of the factory. At first glance, it might seem like one of the countless 50cc models that Vespa produced from the early 1960s well into the 1980s—a production run that clearly reflects quality and reliability. But this particular example carries its own story, a small piece of Nordic motoring culture.

It wasn’t sold in Italy, or even in Sweden, but in Norway. There, lawmakers had chosen a different path than other Nordic countries. Mopeds were adapted to the country’s geography. In regions with steep hills and winding valleys, stronger engines of just over two horsepower were allowed, along with four gears. In other areas, one had to settle for simpler versions with weaker engines and fewer gears. This example belongs to the former category. With its four-speed engine, it became something entirely different from an ordinary 30 moped: low-revving, durable, and at the same time strong.

Today, this Vespa moped stands in a restored, yet completely original condition. It looks and functions exactly as it did in 1976. However, the same limitation applies here as with all Swedish mopeds: 30 km/h, even though the machine carries enough power to double that speed.

That makes it something more than just a moped—it is a reminder of how laws, geography, and technology can interact to create a truly unique variant of what was originally a common vehicle.

Facts about the model

Background of the Vespa
After World War II, Piaggio was forced to abandon aircraft production and needed a new line of manufacturing to move forward. Enrico Piaggio had early on recognized the need for cheap and simple transportation in a Europe under reconstruction.

The first Vespa, the Vespa 98, was launched in 1946. It had a 98cc engine and could reach a top speed of about 60 km/h. It was designed by Corradino D’Ascanio at the request of Enrico Piaggio. The aim was to create something simple, economical, and easy to ride. D’Ascanio had previously worked as a consultant on scooter design and production for Ferdinando Innocenti. An early prototype had been created by Renzo Spolti and Vittorio Casini and was nicknamed Paperino.

The name Vespa (“wasp” in Italian) came from its distinctive shape with a broader rear section. When Enrico Piaggio first saw it, he exclaimed: “Sembra una vespa!” (“It looks like a wasp!”).

Vespa production began in 1946 with 2,484 units leaving the factory, and by 1948, 19,822 had been built. Production grew rapidly, and within just a few years Vespa was being sold in 114 countries and manufactured in 13 of them.
