"A car that gave Volvo a significant boost in sales, especially in the USA. Here it is in good usable condition, with everything in original form. There are minor things to improve if you want it to be in top shape."

Description

A well-maintained 760GLE that exudes exclusive Swedish charm. It is mostly rust-free, and with a paint treatment, it would look very stylish. There is some rust at the bottom of the right front door, slight rust on the left rear fender edge, and a few minor dents that can be easily fixed. There are some small cracks in the turn signal lenses that the owner has chosen to keep original. There is a crack in the windshield, but it is not in the line of sight.

The interior is very nice, with everything clean and intact. The car is well-documented, with inspection papers and receipts. It has a completed service book and an original owner’s manual, along with a manual for the stereo. All keys are present, and all locks function properly. It was inspected without any remarks and received high praise on September 24, 2006.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The engine starts easily, runs quietly, and purrs nicely. The transmission shifts smoothly during the test drive. There is no rattling anywhere, and the car feels very solid. It was a bit chilly during the test drive, so the AC couldn’t be fully tested, but the owner says it works satisfactorily. All electrical functions operate flawlessly.

  • Interior condition:

The interior of the car is in very good condition. The panels, carpets, seats, and headliner are clean and tidy. However, there is a bit of sagging in the headliner at the back (see pictures).

  • Exterior condition:

The overall exterior has a very nice feel. An exterior polish is in order, which would give the car that final shine. A few small touch-up rust spots should be addressed, and possibly a windshield replacement at the front.

  • General condition:

The car’s overall impression exudes luxury, and it looks quite elegant. The dark diplomatic blue color pairs beautifully with the slightly lighter blue interior.

Owner's comment

A car that has given me many enjoyable drives over the past 4 years. It is in good usable condition, with everything functioning properly: AC, power windows, electric sunroof, and other features. It has nice original Volvo wheels, and the ones mounted in 1986 are included as well. The exterior is in good shape but needs a proper polish to shine. I am the fourth owner, following two older gentlemen and a friend of mine. It received praise during its inspection overall. It has never been rust-repaired and has been driven sparingly in winter. It has consistently been underbody treated by the previous owner. A lot has been replaced, such as tires, all engine hoses, filters, and oils, etc. This car can be considered as close to original condition as possible. There is a lot of documentation, and there aren’t many 760s left in this condition with this mileage. With a little love, this could be a truly fine car. I haven’t hidden anything by “dressing it up”; the new owner gets exactly what they see.

Facts about the model

In February 1982, the 760 was introduced with three engine options: a four-cylinder turbo engine, a V6 increased to 2.8 liters, and the straight-six diesel engine D24, produced by Volkswagen but specified by Volvo. This engine made the 760 the world’s fastest-accelerating diesel car at the time.

In Sweden, the new 760 GLE was priced just under the psychological 100,000 kronor mark, costing only 99,800 kronor. For that price, customers received a fully equipped car with a V6 engine, automatic transmission, air conditioning, a sunroof, and power steering. The sales success at home and in export markets was swift, leading to the introduction of the simpler volume models in the 740 series, available in both four- and five-door versions.

The Volvo 760 marked a turning point for Volvo Cars, both product-wise and financially, becoming the foundation for the company’s future, despite being a significant investment of 3.5 billion kronor. The intention was for the 760 and its successors to last throughout the 1980s, and that’s precisely what happened. Production of the V90, the last Volvo based on the 760, did not cease until 1998. A total of 221,309 units of the 760 model were produced.
