Toyota Celica Supra 2.8i — 1984

A proper 1980s Japanese icon, the 1984 Toyota Celica Supra combines aggressive wedge-shaped styling, pop-up headlights, a silky-smooth 2.8-litre straight-six and rear-wheel drive. Cool, unmistakably ’80s and increasingly sought after, this is old-school Toyota at its best.

"Well kept and great fun to drive, this Supra still feels surprisingly powerful in today’s traffic and is packed with 1980s charm, from its digital dashboard and sports seats to the added factory rear spoiler. Inspected until 2028-04-30 and ready for its next owner to enjoy."

Description

This car comes with a great history. Originally sold by Carnes Bil in Borås to Mr Zangaro of Borås on 29 December 1983, it must have made quite a New Year’s present to himself.

He kept the Supra until 1987, when it passed to its second owner, a lady also from Borås. She used the car until 1999, after which it was carefully stored in a garage for the next 19 years before being purchased by the current owner in 2018.

Fortunately, the car was stored properly and avoided winter use, helping to preserve it from the rust issues that affected so many of these cars. Its remarkably low original mileage of just 82,000 km is supported by service stamps and an old inspection report from 1999 recording 79,186 km. Combined with its long period in storage, this makes it a particularly interesting and well-preserved example today.

According to the car’s history, the first owner damaged a door and wing early in his ownership. The car was repaired through insurance and the affected areas repainted. Interestingly, the current owner’s father worked at the same garage at the time the repair was carried out.

The current owner, a car enthusiast, purchased the Supra in 2018 and carefully recommissioned it after its long period in storage. The fuel system, electrics and engine were checked, worn components replaced and the braking system renovated. Importantly, the exterior required little more than a good polish, while the interior was simply cleaned and preserved.

Once completed, the car passed a new inspection in 2022 and has since been enjoyed locally as a summer car. It has continued to be maintained and serviced yearly by the owner.

Car and Driver placed the Celica Supra on its prestigious 10 Best list in both 1983 and 1984, thanks in part to its excellent road handling and smooth, fuel-injected 2.8-litre 5M-E straight-six engine — further proof of just how highly regarded the Supra was when new.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

The car starts directly with a stable idle and a smooth-sounding engine. There is a slight belt squeak for around 20 seconds on start-up, which then disappears.

On the road, the Supra is great fun to drive, with a responsive engine, good handling, easy gear changes and solid brakes. The engine bay is clean with only light oxidation on some alloy parts. No warning lights noted. Original alloy wheels with good tyres.

Serviced this year and inspected until 2028-04-30, it is ready for its next owner to enjoy directly.

  • Interior condition

Clean and well-kept original interior with grey striped textile seats, all presenting in good condition. The driver’s seat shows some wear along the lower edge of the rear panel, while the side bolster has lost a little of its padding. The remaining seats are in very good condition.

The door cards, interior panels, carpets and headliner are all well preserved. The original dashboard and instrumentation are complete and working, including the digital display. There is some minor pixelation affecting the zero digit on the speedometer, but the display remains fully functional and all other numbers and readings show correctly.

The electric windows and sunroof are fully operational, and a more modern radio has been fitted. The interior plastic trim is complete and remains remarkably fresh throughout.

  • Exterior condition

A very presentable car with straight bodywork, good panel fit and no notable dents, damage or major rust issues. The main areas to mention are a few small paint blisters around the rear spoiler mounting points. The boot lid also has an approximately 1 cm dent along its edge, while the side plastic trims on the body panels are slightly lifting in places.

The underside is clean and solid, with no significant damage or rust issues. There is some minor damage to the seams from the car having previously been jacked in the wrong position, but nothing serious.

The paintwork is clean and bright overall, with only a few minor age-related marks and a small area of thin paint on the edge of one wing from polishing. The car received an older repaint approximately 35+ years ago, which has held up

  • General condition

These cars are becoming increasingly rare, especially in this condition and with such low mileage. It has attracted a huge amount of attention in our depot — everyone seems to stop, look and comment on it. A proper youngtimer with a strong cult following and unmistakable 1980s character.

Facts about the model

The Supra actually began life as a more luxurious, six-cylinder version of the Toyota Celica. The second-generation A60 Supra arrived in 1982 and was a major step forward, gaining its own styling, pop-up headlights, flared arches and a much more sporting character. It remained related to the Celica but was clearly positioned as Toyota's flagship GT car. For European markets, including Sweden, the flagship model was fitted with the 2.8-litre 5M-E DOHC straight-six, combined with rear-wheel drive and four-wheel disc brakes. The A60 was also praised for its handling. Toyota gave it independent rear suspension and even used Lotus engineering input during development.
