Vespa 180 Super Sport — 1966

A nice representative of the sportiest Vespa scooter offered in the mid-1960s. Presentable condition, road-ready, and likely only used for 12 km over the past 25 years – that being to its last inspection in August 2024.

"Fun and classic 1960s scooter, sought-after and lively with its distinctive engine."

Description

It was delivered new in Sweden in April 1966 and has had few owners over the years. The current owner (the estate) bought the scooter in 1990, and it was also he who had it restored while living in Gothenburg. The engine was rebuilt by EM Scooters in Gothenburg in the 1990s. The owner barely used the scooter but still had it inspected in 1997. Today it is deregistered but will be road-ready once registered again with valid insurance. The most recent and final approved inspection was carried out on 2024-08-20, when it was ridden to the station by a friend of the owner.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

Starts easily and responds well to the choke. Feels right in engine, clutch, and gearbox, and both brakes bite as they should. Like many older scooters with original carburetors, it benefits from setting the fuel tap to ‘Chiuso’ and letting the fuel burn off in the carburetor before shutting down. This leaves the spark plug dry and makes for easy starting next time.

  • Interior condition

Two fine seats, one loose and one mounted, both reupholstered with grey piping.

  • Exterior condition

Older restoration and paintwork in good condition, with a few small marks and touch-ups. The handles for locking the side panels have been swapped left/right and ended up upside down—function is fine, but better to switch them back. NOS hubcaps and red rims, silver in original as on the spare wheel. Older Trelleborg tires.

  • General condition

Attractive model in representative and user-friendly fine condition. Road-ready once registered.

Facts about the model

The Vespa 180 Super Sport was the successor to the 160 Grand Sport in Piaggio’s series of sport models, and the predecessor to the Vespa 180 Rally. The SS had a somewhat sharper, more angular shape than the GS and featured a trapezoid-shaped headlamp. The original engine design was retained, though a modification was made to the crankshaft, which was no longer a full-circle design. It used a piston pin with a 16 mm diameter, allowing for the installation of a needle bearing instead of a brass bushing. With the introduction of a 62 mm piston and a 60 mm crankshaft, displacement increased to 180 cc. As a result, output rose by about 10%, and the SS 180 became the first Vespa model to reach the 100 km/h mark.

Trivia: The Super Sport was never officially offered on the German market, possibly suggesting there was little demand for sport models at the time—but more likely because the abbreviation SS still carried heavy associations with the past during WWII.
