Description

The motorcycle was purchased in 2010 in Los Angeles, USA, by its first owner. He had only ridden it on the street, so it was not worn out and remains in the same fine condition today. In California, these bikes are allowed on the road if fitted with a ‘green sticker,’ which still remains on the left fork leg as a curiosity. In Sweden, these motorcycles are normally only eligible for enduro registration, which means they may only be ridden on public roads by licensed riders under Svemo regulations, and only in direct connection with training or competition organized by a Svemo-registered motor club.

This essentially makes it impossible for an ordinary motorcycle enthusiast to legally use an enduro-registered bike on public roads. But this Honda XR 250R is road-registered and can be used without restrictions by anyone holding a motorcycle license.

So how did this happen?
The owner explains that he imported the bike in 2010 with the goal of road-registering it. Everyone he asked said it was impossible. This only made him more determined to succeed. One of the main challenges was passing the noise test. Step one was to acquire full noise-measurement equipment and conduct test runs. At the first attempt, it was clear that the off-road tires had to be swapped for road tires, as they made too much noise. After weeks of adjustments and testing, the official test was finally carried out by Svensk Maskinprovning AB (SMP). On 2010-06-10, the bike passed the noise test.

But there were more challenges. For example, a speedometer is required on a road-registered motorcycle, yet none is fitted on an off-road bike. The solution was an electronic speedometer driven from the front wheel. Unfortunately, these lack odometers and only have trip meters, so the total mileage is unknown. However, the owner states he has used the bike 10 to 15 times since buying it in 2010. Judging by its condition, it clearly hasn’t covered a lot of miles. Among enthusiasts, this model of XR is considered a classic, with a reputation for being virtually indestructible.

Some extra parts are included with the motorcycle (see photos), including the front fender fitted by the first owner when he rode it on the street in the USA.

This is a distance auction. The photos were taken by an independent photographer. Information about the motorcycle and its technical status has been provided by the owner. BWA has not inspected the motorcycle on site.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

    Equipped with an upgraded triple clamp, a modified exhaust tip directing the gases downward, and a special chain guard. See the photos to identify the improvements for yourself. Approved by the inspection authority in exactly the condition it is in now.

    It has been standing still in the garage for a few years, and when fuel was added for a test start during photography, the carburetor needle valve and the gasket between the fuel tank and tap leaked. The owner has previously replaced the needle valve, as these do not tolerate the diluted modern fuel used in Sweden. Therefore, it has not been started now, but it has no technical issues.

  • Exterior condition:

    Maintained in an almost unbelievable way. An unrestored and used off-road motorcycle simply doesn’t usually look like this.

  • General condition:

    Very well cared for, neither worn out nor tampered with. Never raced, but always ridden on the street, both in the USA and here in Sweden. We are not aware of any other street-legal XR 250R in Sweden.

Facts about the model

The Honda XR250R and XR250L are off-road and dual-sport motorcycles manufactured by Honda from 1979 to 2004, as part of the Honda XR series. They are equipped with four-stroke engines featuring SOHC four valves and a displacement of 249 cc (15.2 cu in).

The 1996–2004 versions of the XR250R had 25 cm of suspension travel front and rear and a 41 mm cartridge fork at the front. Tire sizes were 80/100-21 at the front and 100/100-18 at the rear. It came with 13–48 sprocket gearing and had an original top speed of around 120 km/h at 8000 rpm. The changes between 1996 and 2004 consisted only of decal updates, with the mechanical parts remaining identical.
