"A drivable and road-ready vehicle, according to the current owner. However, someone else might think it's good enough as it is; there’s nothing wrong with its functionality."

Description

The car had an adventurous existence until the current owner purchased it in the fall of 1983. Early ambitions to compete in the Monte Carlo Rally resulted in damage to the plastic body, followed by long trips down to the continent to test the racetracks of the time, which led to another crash. It also had a wild few years on the old Skarpnäck airfield track, was rammed by a police car, and later passed between less scrupulous car dealers in the capital. Among other things. In the 'Owner's Comments' below, the owner shares a bit more detailed information about his research on the facts and his own experiences. At any rate, it was delivered new to the manager of Visby Motorcentral in November, where the story begins. The current owner has long had the P1900 on the waiting list for a restoration of the meticulous, methodical, and precise kind that characterizes his other restorations. But age and illness now prevent him, and he hopes someone will undertake a restoration with similar ambition.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The engine and gearbox work well together, and the engine is also the one that was installed at the factory. In other words, matching numbers.

  • Interior condition:

Stylish and beautiful interior with fine leather, good carpets, door panels, and the instrument panel with all the round gauges and a wrinkle finish on the panel itself. Pay special attention to the unique wooden ignition key. The previous owner took up an offer to buy a piece of oak from the recently salvaged Vasa ship in 1961. Today, something like that would probably not be possible. Also note the sun visors from a Mercedes 190 SL and the exterior mirrors from a Saab 96.

  • Exterior condition:

The car was originally off-white and has had several different colors over the years. The current dark blue paint was done sometime in the 1970s when it was in Belgium with a Swedish owner. The finish of that paint isn't of high quality, but it’s an exterior that still holds up well and doesn’t require too much caution.

  • General condition:

They don't come up for sale very often, those that remain of the 67 manufactured. Here's the chance to buy a car for a detailed restoration or to drive it as it is, with all the history and provenance that lives in the car.

Owner's comment

I 8796 The first owner on November 28, 1956, was Folke Brattlöf, who was the director of AB Visby Motorcentral and a Volvo dealer. The car was also registered with the company for a few years until he moved to the mainland and became a Mercedes dealer in Stockholm instead. The current owner participated in a vintage car rally on Gotland with the car in the early 1990s and visited the aforementioned car dealership, which connected him by phone with an old man who had been the foreman there in the 1950s. He recounted that the director’s son had signed up to participate in the Monte Carlo Rally and trained at night on the cobblestone roads around Visby, which resulted in a gatepost getting lodged into the right front fender. The Monte Carlo trip was canceled, and the foreman was tasked with repairing the damage, which proved challenging as they were not accustomed to working with plastic at that time. A 55686 The second owner was Bengt Möllberg, who bought the car on July 24, 1959, from a Saab dealer where the first owner had left it for sale. The price was 12,000 SEK, and a very worn Sunbeam Talbot was traded in, plus a 2½-year payment plan. Bengt liked racing and helped found the Stockholm Sports Car Club in the early 1960s. He also trained as a race director and organized several races at the Skarpnäck airfield, perhaps 10–12 times per year. The car was tuned, lightened, the bumpers were removed, air intakes were cut into the hood, and it was painted in silver metallic with a roughly 20 cm wide red stripe down the middle of the hood and over the trunk. Bengt made trips to the continent, visiting cities like Paris and Brussels and racetracks such as Spa in Belgium and the Nürburgring in Germany. At that time, as a private individual, you could pay a fee to test the tracks when no races were happening, and that’s what they did on the 22 km long Nürburgring. After 7 km, Bengt had to swerve to avoid a vineyard worker cycling on the track, causing the car to skid off and end up upside down with Bengt and his wife hanging from the fortunately installed lap belts. However, the car landed sideways across a ditch, and bystanders tipped the car onto its side, allowing his wife to escape unscathed except for a few bruises. Bengt, however, couldn’t move, and there were fears that his neck was broken. An ambulance took him to the hospital, where, after three days, a radiologist informed Bengt that he had been incredibly lucky—his second vertebra was fractured, and a small piece was missing. He was airlifted home for continued care at Danderyd Hospital. Remarkably, his recovery was swift, and he was fully restored without any lasting damage, save for the terrifying experience of being so close to death. The car was transported to Volvo in Gothenburg, where Bil & Truck repaired it, and Bengt, along with another P1900 owner, Lars Strängborn, collected it. Together with Strängborn, they laminated a fabric convertible top and made a mold for hardtops to make the cars more usable in winter. They also integrated extra lights into the front, and the grille was moved forward, altering the car’s appearance. B 90548 Mr. and Mrs. Möllberg moved to a newly built villa in Huddinge in 1964, where the car became increasingly impractical as their family grew, so it was sold to a car dealer on Vallhallvägen for a few thousand kronor (1965). The car bounced around among dealers in Stockholm without being re-registered, and the current owner first saw it in a basement garage on Ringvägen in Södermalm. A 91818 Håkan Nordgren saw one of the four prototypes as a 12-year-old when it was displayed at Osterman’s Marble Halls and became fond of the model. On July 14, 1966, the silver-colored car with a red stripe, fixed black hardtop, and without bumpers became his for 3,900 SEK, and his childhood dream came true. B 2900 In October of the same year, Håkan moved to Täby, prompting the number change. Håkan used the car frequently, and at one point in Solna, he was rammed by an unmarked police car that had failed to stop at a stop sign. The left rear fender shattered, and multiple police officers were called to the scene since Solna police couldn’t investigate their own incidents. They all helped collect the plastic pieces, which Håkan later used to mend the fender, before painting the car orange/red! The car, however, was drivable home. Håkan was summoned to court, where the police’s chief lawyer argued that the stop sign wasn’t included in the local traffic regulations, meaning the left-hand rule applied. However, the county court found the argument illogical and fully acquitted the young Håkan. The car lacked a convertible top frame, so Håkan contacted the previous owner and, sure enough, the frame and bumpers were in a garage in Huddinge, ready for pickup. Håkan later moved to Belgium for work, got a company car, and transferred ownership to his younger brother, Jan Svensson in Täby, on June 27, 1969. However, it was agreed that once Jan lost interest, Håkan would get the car back, which happened on December 1, 1975. The car was taken to Belgium and restored as close to original as possible, although the royal blue color isn’t original—it was once off-white. The current owner saw the car for the second time in Sollentuna when it was part of the exhibition 'Cars Through Time' in November 1979. DYJ578 A small classified ad in DN brought the car to Åtvidaberg on October 31, 1983, for 40,000 SEK. It wasn’t immediately drivable, but with some adjustments, it has participated in numerous rallies and other events since. The second owner of the car contacted Volvo in Gothenburg in the 1960s, and they suggested this car was the first series-produced Volvo Sport after the four prototypes, as the body has production number 5. But why does it have chassis number 33? Another curious point is how the first registered owner was a director and Volvo dealer when Volvo’s handwritten delivery list states that it was delivered as a lottery prize to Bromma in the SSU lottery on September 27, 1956. The Volvo Sport cost 19,700 SEK new in 1956, nearly as much as a Mercedes 190 SL and 2½ times the price of a PV 444, making it difficult to sell, and many became lottery prizes. Perhaps one day it will be fully restored? That would be exciting!"
