Mercedes-Benz 190 SL W121 — 1962

A great opportunity for anyone looking to own a meticulously restored and well-maintained Mercedes 190 SL. It doesn't get much closer to showroom condition than this.

"One of the best restorations I've ever seen. A tribute to the craftsman behind this top-quality work."

Description

The current owner purchased the car in 2006 in a worn but untouched condition and dedicated 10 years to a meticulous restoration, completing it with an inspection in 2016. Since then, he has driven the Mercedes sparingly each summer. The goal during the restoration was to maintain the car's authenticity as much as possible, using original parts, screws, paint, etc. The car had rust damage in three of the four floor panels, which were replaced with NOS (new old stock) sheets according to the original design. The car was stripped down to bare metal before trial fitting and adjusting the details.

Most of the replaced parts are NOS, but a few exceptions were made for the tires, steering damper (of Japanese origin), and a modern starter motor for improved performance. The car starts easily and runs very smoothly, partly due to the original Solex carburetors, which were expertly restored by Thuresson.

The car is in an excellent and carefully restored condition, where it's clear that the owner took great care not to "over-restore" it. Often, restorations can result in overly "thick" and glossy paint or an interior that looks too new, but this car has retained its character. A hardtop in an unrenovated but relatively good condition, two sets of keys, and a NOS original steering wheel are included with the car. According to the owner, and based on my assessment, the car has "matching numbers," as shown in the photos.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The engine and drivetrain run very smoothly. The car is equipped with original Solex carburetors, expertly restored by Thuresson, which have been optimally adjusted and calibrated. Other mechanical components, such as bushings, suspension, and transmission, feel tight and free from any noises, squeaks, or "clunks." All auxiliary systems function as they should, except for the tachometer, which behaves erratically and stops working after a while. The speedometer face displays km/h, but the odometer and trip meter are in miles.

  • Interior condition:

The interior was professionally reupholstered during the restoration and remains in excellent and well-maintained condition. All interior details exhibit a high level of finish and quality and are in very good condition. Once again, the car has not been over-restored; the upholstery looks as though it was originally installed and has seen almost no use since 1962.

  • Exterior condition:

The paintwork is of professional quality. The chrome (mostly re-chromed to a very high finish), glass, and tires are all in excellent condition, as is the soft top. The hardtop is included in an unrenovated condition, see pictures. The underside of the car is in very clean and well-maintained condition, with rust protection applied. Even inside the jack ports, the car is in excellent shape, see pictures. The panel alignment is meticulously done, with even and clean gaps throughout.

  • General condition:

A beautifully restored Mercedes that has been driven sparingly since its restoration. The car still fits perfectly with the pace of Swedish roads today. Top condition.

Facts about the model

The Mercedes-Benz 190SL is often seen as the "little brother" to the 300SL, but it was actually more closely related to the W120. However, the 1.9-liter engine had its roots in the 300SL.

The 190SL was introduced alongside its more celebrated sister model, the 300SL, at the New York Auto Show in February 1954. While the 300SL was a sports car derived from early 1950s racing cars, the 190SL was built on a shorter chassis taken from the family sedan, the 180. Mercedes-Benz aimed at customers who wanted a more refined and reliable sports car, one better suited for long-distance driving than what British and Italian competitors could offer.

The 190SL introduced a few innovations that would later benefit more sedate family cars, such as a modern four-cylinder overhead valve engine with an overhead camshaft and a swing axle, which provided safer and more predictable handling characteristics.

The Mercedes-Benz W121 BII, as the 190SL was officially known, was produced between May 1955 and February 1963.
