MG TD 1250cc — 1952

A British left-hand-drive classic, imported from the USA. This is not an unusual route for cars of this type, as left-hand-drive examples are often more highly valued today in countries with right-hand traffic. A charming and lively example.

"Classic and affordable vintage charm, with all the ingredients of a true British classic."

Description

Imported from the USA in December 2025. The current owner purchased the car knowing that there were a few items that needed attention which had not been mentioned at the time of purchase, most notably the brakes, which required refurbishment or replacement. Unfortunately, the owner has not been able to enjoy his newly imported classic due to problems with his foot. He simply finds it too difficult to step in between the seat and A-pillar and bring his foot into the car comfortably. The latest and, under current regulations, final inspection was carried out on 5 December 2025 in connection with the car’s registration.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

Starts easily and quickly. The clutch engages quite high and somewhat abruptly, so it takes a little getting used to: ease it up to the biting point, get the car rolling, then feed in the throttle. It may simply be a matter of adjustment. Otherwise, the car is easy and pleasant to drive, and its 54 hp feels surprisingly lively.

  • Interior condition

Soft, attractive and inviting leather upholstery. The wood-trimmed dashboard and controls are beautifully presented, and the owner has also had the steering wheel wrapped in leather.

  • Exterior condition

The car was repainted and underwent bodywork restoration in the USA, and it shows a few minor marks consistent with normal use as a collector car. The soft top and tonneau cover are both in good condition. There is a small tear at the left rear of the soft top which should be relatively easy to repair. The car is fitted with well-preserved Michelin XZX tyres with good tread.

  • General condition

A tidy TD with a genuine and well-preserved overall impression. It only needs a few minor adjustments and routine maintenance.

Facts about the model

The MG T-Type Midget was a series of sports cars produced by MG between 1936 and 1955. The MG TD was introduced in 1950 and was, in many respects, an all-new car. It combined the body and engine of its predecessor with the chassis from the MG Y-Type saloon.

This meant that the TD gained independent front suspension and rack-and-pinion steering. The body was also widened to provide more interior space. Bumpers became standard equipment, as did steel wheels, while wire wheels were available as an optional extra.

The TD was also the first MG to be built in left-hand-drive form, reflecting the importance of the US export market.

A total of 29,664 MG TDs were produced between 1950 and 1953. According to figures from the Swedish Transport Agency, fewer than 180 examples are currently registered in Sweden.
