"Nice and well-preserved Swedish motorsport provenance in all its simplicity."

Description

The car began life as a Volvo Turbo Cup car in 1982, a one-make series created to promote Volvo’s long-awaited 240 Turbo model. The owner competed for the full season and, like a few others at the time (probably including Volvo themselves), began to wonder if the 240 Turbo could be raced in Group A—the premier international touring car class of the era.

The current owner, the well-known Swedish motorsport figure Greger Petterson, then had Magnum Racing build a proper Group A engine, installed it in his Turbo Cup car, and entered it with himself, along with the internationally recognized Anders Olofsson and Peggen Andersson, in the Silverstone Tourist Trophy 500, the final round of that year’s European Touring Car Championship.

The organizers were so amused that someone wanted to race the boxy 240 that they waived the entry fee, while Avon Tyres sponsored the team with tires. In the race, engine problems arose—the machine didn’t hold—but the car still appears in the entry lists as a curious Swedish pioneer.

The following year, 1983, there were already 3–4 privately entered Swedish Group A 240s in the ETCC. The ball was rolling, and the rest is a cherished and celebrated part of Volvo history today.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The original Group A engine is no longer with the car, nor is the turbo engine from its Cup years. It is currently fitted with a Köhler-tuned B23 with twin Weber 48s, set up as a reliable endurance engine producing around 250 hp. According to Köhler Racing, building a correct Turbo Cup engine and restoring the car to full Cup specification would be a relatively straightforward task should a buyer wish to do so.

  • Interior condition:

Fresh interior with a fine Recaro Profi SPG seat. Otherwise, just as you would expect from a race car of the 1980s. The car has aged well and has been continuously cared for.

  • Exterior condition:

Neat and well-presented after all its racing years, it has been on display in the Sportpromotion collection alongside other historic Volvo race cars. Fitted with 5-bolt BBS wheels with older Goodyear slicks.

  • General condition:

It saw only limited activity as a Group A car after its first adventure, yet it still carries a certain historical significance for Volvo’s Group A program in the 1980s. After all, this was the first one. Smart, clean, and in the right condition for an older race car.
