Description

Swedish-sold Mercedes-Benz 250 SE that has remained in the same family since new, owned by the same person since 1984. The mechanics have been serviced and replaced when necessary, but this is still an extremely original and untouched car. Engine and drivetrain performed very well during the test drive. The paintwork could benefit from a careful machine polish, and it is also likely possible to make the minor dents on the right-hand side less visible without the need for repainting.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

A Mercedes-Benz that still behaves exactly as it should on the road after 58 years. The fuel-injected engine starts immediately and runs smoothly. The gear changes are precise, and there are no unusual noises from the drivetrain or chassis. Drive gently enough and you can even hear the clock ticking, although the period radio has fallen silent. Two sets of keys are included, along with the service book and extensive documentation of all work carried out by the owner since 1984.

  • Interior condition:

Unusually neat original interior showing only minor signs of age. A few damages can be found in the carpet. The rear seat has been fitted with two three-point seat belts and a lap belt in the middle. The large trunk is also well preserved, and the big rubber mat is in good condition.

  • Exterior condition:

According to the owner, the car still has its original paint and has never undergone rust repairs. The paint is rather matte and slightly patchy, but still well preserved considering the car’s age. There are some minor scratches and stone chips, and on the right side there are a couple of larger soft parking dents.

  • General condition:

A Mercedes-Benz that has been very well cared for by its few owners and, despite somewhat matte paint, carries its age very well.

Owner's comment

“My grandfather was the first owner, and I took over in 1984. It was an ordinary family car at first — one memory is when we drove to Gotland in 1986 with a caravan in tow. A few years later it was put into storage until 2010, when I put it back on the road. It has run just over 100,000 km.”

Facts about the model

The timelessly simple design of the Mercedes-Benz W108 generation was the work of Paul Bracq, who at Mercedes also designed the Pagoda model, among others, and who later contributed to the design of the French high-speed train TGV and the first BMW 7 Series. The Mercedes model with the internal code W108 and its long-wheelbase sister model W109 were intended to replace the so-called Fintail when introduced in 1965. With the new model, the vertical thermometer-style speedometer disappeared, replaced by a conventional round gauge. Unlike the Fintail, the W108/W109 featured disc brakes all around. Among the engine options were the 250 S with a six-cylinder carbureted engine producing 130 hp, and the 250 SE whose fuel-injected six delivered 150 hp. According to the Mercedes-Benz journal, 55,181 units of the 250 SE were produced. At this time, Mercedes had not yet introduced the designation S-Class – Sonderklasse; it was only with the successor W116, launched in 1972, that the name was first used.
