Buick Roadmaster 5.2 L — 1939

Model 81 Touring Sedan was a top-of-the-range luxury car of the late 1930s, designed to carry six passengers in comfort—an ideal choice for society’s high flyers and, just as often, the gangsters of the era.

"The 5.2-litre “Wonder” straight-eight, fitted with a single downdraft carburetor, delivered 141 horsepower. Combined with Buick’s signature waterfall grille and flowing Art Deco lines, the Roadmaster is truly a rolling work of art."

Description

This car is being sold on behalf of the owner’s estate. It was imported from the USA in 1991 and first registered in Sweden on 1991-09-04, remaining in the same ownership for 39 years. Paperwork found in the glovebox shows earlier history in Pennsylvania, while a tax sticker on the windscreen indicates it was registered in North Carolina in 1991.

At some stage—likely 30 to 40 years ago—the car underwent a renovation and repaint. It remains in very solid condition today, with presentable paintwork that would look even better with a polish. The interior still looks and feels almost like new, suggesting a professional restoration, while the chrome trim and detailing shine beautifully.

Only a handful of this model are registered in Sweden, making it both an interesting and attractive choice for enthusiasts. With prices for 1930s American classics softening in recent years, this example also represents a more affordable entry into pre-war motoring.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The engine does not currently start, but everything under the bonnet is complete and appears usable. It turns over freely when rotated in gear. The car rolls easily for loading and transport, though it will need to be collected with a trailer. It sits on good wheels with older tires that hold air for several days.

  • Interior condition:

Interior is very well kept and clean, featuring wonderful textile seats front and rear, with only a small hole near the driver’s side and a few stains on the rear seat’s fold-down armrest (see picture). Door cards, carpets, and headliner are all in great condition, and even the boot space retains its complete mat set. The dashboard is fitted with its original gauges and period chrome details, complemented by a classic Bakelite steering wheel and knobs.

  • Exterior condition:

Bodywork is straight with no dents or signs of rust—super solid throughout—and the underbody looks excellent with no rust or damage, clearly very well kept. The paint presents bright and fresh, with only minor imperfections: small marks and scratches, a larger scratch on the driver’s door and rear wing, and some micro-blisters around the front and rear wing edges (see pictures). Most of these could be improved with light touch-ups and a good polish. Chrome all around is bright and clean.

  • General condition:

A wonderful car to own and enjoy—its presence is undeniable even when standing still. The pre-war chrome features and detailing make it truly art on wheels, the kind of craftsmanship that will never be built again. With a weekend’s work reviewing the basics, it should soon be back up and running.
