Facts about the model

Source: Classic Motor

The Tatraplan was considered a modern car when it debuted after World War II, featuring a 4-cylinder, air-cooled rear engine and an aerodynamic body. Tatra was an early adopter of streamlined design, as it was called at the time. As early as the mid-1930s, the company was building similar cars, but with a V8 engine in the rear. In 1951, 106 of these cars were registered in Sweden, possibly due to the general shortage of vehicles from other countries. The Tatra factory in Koprivnice was established in 1923 as a continuation of the Nesseldorf brand. The designer of the first Tatra car was Hans Ledwinka, who had returned from Steyr in Austria. The car became a true classic in automotive history, with a 2-cylinder air-cooled boxer engine of 1,056 cc and 12 horsepower, a central tubular frame, and swing axles.

The next significant development came with the Tatra model 57, introduced in 1932, which also had a central tubular frame, swing axles, and an air-cooled 4-cylinder engine. Ledwinka and Tatra made automotive history again with the model 77 in 1934. Its enclosed body was designed according to strict aerodynamic principles. A central frame was split, using the same technical solutions, but with a smaller engine, only 2,960 cc. That same year, the Tatra model 97 was introduced with the same body but powered by a 4-cylinder engine. Until 1941, only one model was produced due to the German occupation of Czechoslovakia.

In 1945, the Tatra factory was taken over by the state, producing the front-engine 57B and the rear-engine 87. These were replaced in 1948 by a single model: the Tatraplan, with a rear engine like the one shown in the photos. It was manufactured until 1954. After that, there was a three-year period without passenger car production. In 1957, the all-new Tatra 603 was unveiled, once again featuring an air-cooled V8 engine, now with 2,472 cc.
