Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Starts easily and runs smoothly with stable engine and drivetrain performance. All functions such as steering, shifting, braking, and handling were found to be working well. Test-driven at a moderate pace on small roads and less trafficked routes. Not inspected on a lift, but it appeared to be in good condition based on visible areas. Additionally, photos of the undercarriage from the current owner support this. No comments from the vehicle inspection authority.

  • Interior condition:

The Crème interior is in good used condition. Seats, rear seat, door panels, dashboard, and instrumentation are all at a similar level of wear. The wood details are in good condition, though there are cracks on the center console. All electrical functions appear to be working, and the air conditioning cools effectively.

  • Exterior condition:

The paint is in good condition with normal wear and tear. The front spoiler has stone chips and paint peeling. Glass, trim, plastic, rubber, and lighting details are all in a similar condition. The wheels show signs of use but have good tires. A detailing could elevate the overall appearance by one or two levels. The soft top is tight with normal wear and tear, and the electrical function works well. The engine bay and trunk are in good original condition.

  • General condition:

A charming and impressive vehicle in good condition with normal wear and tear, which can be enhanced with relatively simple measures. The final model years, featuring upgrades and new engines, are interesting and sought-after by enthusiasts and classic car collectors.

Facts about the model

The successor to the E-Type, introduced in 1975, initially struggled to inherit its predecessor's iconic status. Partially this was unfair, as the new XJ-S was a different type of car—more of a Grand Tourer than a pure sports car. It was undoubtedly a nod to the American market. At the same time, its design and lines made it look like a fast "road locomotive" even when stationary. Opinions were divided, but gradually it gained popularity as a fast and comfortable Grand Routier. The V12, which was the only engine offered initially, was a powerful unit, though thirsty. Buyers could choose between a manual transmission (up until 1979) or an automatic. The manual transmission made a comeback when Jaguar also introduced a six-cylinder 3.6L engine as a complement to the larger engine. Initially, the XJ-S was only intended as a coupe, mainly due to safety considerations in the US and Europe, which phased out the option of a new open car. As always, the market eventually decides, and after a time, a few open XJ-S models were built through private initiatives. Thus, in the mid-1980s, a Targa variant was introduced, similar to the BMW Bauer and Triumph Stag. However, buyers wanted something with even more wind in their hair.

Finally, from the 1988 model year, the XJ-S could be had as a true Cabriolet.

In 1991, a facelift was introduced, featuring a modified rear end that aligned with the design of other Jaguar models. Over the years, the engines were upgraded, with the six-cylinder increasing to 4.0L and the twelve-cylinder to 6.0L. In 1995, the latter engine and the XJS, now without the hyphen, were discontinued. The following year, the six-cylinder variant was also phased out, and Jaguar prepared to launch its successor, the XK8.

So, while the XJ-S had a slow start, it eventually remained in production for over 20 years, with a total of 115,413 units built.
