Description
Earlier that year, in 1973, they had taken delivery of a rather modest version of the Mercedes S-class, a 280S with a carburetor engine and simple fabric upholstery. It's likely that several S-classes were delivered at the same time. Mercedes in Germany was keen to supply cars to the royal household, but as long as Queen Louise was alive (she passed away in 1965), no German or Italian cars were allowed in the royal garage. The queen's memory of the war and its atrocities was still vivid.
This particular car, previously in the royal fleet, has clocked just over 332,000 kilometers and requires some thorough care and work. However, it's the provenance that's truly unique - a vehicle with a rich royal history. It's going on auction as the king celebrates his 50th year on the throne, and the car itself, a 1973 model, turns 50, although it might have been manufactured in the fall of 1972. This particular car served in the royal garage from March 1973 to June 1979, making it one of the vehicles used by our king during his Eriksgata in 1974, and possibly by Gustaf VI Adolf during his last six months on the throne.
Technical data
Condition
-
Mechanical condition
The car easily cold starts with starting fluid and without it once it has run for a while, ensuring that the carburetor and fuel pump receive some fuel. The gearbox shifts well, but the vehicle has only been test-driven outside its storage location and not over a long distance. The most recent inspection was done on December 6, 2010.
-
Interior condition
The interior is upholstered in what appears to be the original fabric. The driver's seat cushion is worn with a hole, and there's also a hole on the right rear headrest, which has been patched with silver tape. Otherwise, a thorough cleaning would likely suffice to restore the seats and cushions, complementing an otherwise nicely renovated car. The headliner is in good condition, and while the rubber mats are worn, they conceal good quality textile underneath.
-
Exterior condition
The car has undergone a repaint in its past, and currently, the paint exhibits wear and tear. Various signs, including touch-ups, markings, rust spots, and paint chips can be observed sporadically. It rides on aged, worn-out tires, which are set on steel rims adorned with original hubcaps.
-
General condition
A rolling piece or a complete restoration project ready to be finished to showroom condition, where much of its value lies in its historical significance.
