Description
In the mid-sixties, in 1966, this then light green (probably code L511 Birch Green) VW 1500 – also called notchback for its classic two-door sedan – was built into a convertible to resemble the 16 prototypes that Volkswagen was planning to build. But a couple of known prototypes are still around one prototype stands at the VW Museum in Wolfsburg and the other one at the Karmann Museum in Osnabrück.
Technical data
Condition
-
Mechanical condition
The engine is a 1600 double carburetor on just over 50 horses. The owner has renovated the brakes, changed the shock absorber, and looked over the suspension and the front car; in short, done all mechanical work on the car. It feels cohesive on the road, the engine is alert and responds nicely and the gearbox is surprisingly accurate, as accurate as it can be in an old folka.
-
Interior condition
Fresh seats and carpets that are relatively newly fitted and the seat upholstery is from that era. Some deviations in the color scheme of different details, common wear and a period sports steering wheel sum up the car's age on the inside.
-
Exterior condition
The paint has a little matte finish, there are some scratches here and there and the car lacks a cabriolet roof and roof frame. The hardest part is probably getting to the crank able rear windows, but going down to the museums and documenting these prototypes will probably bring a lot of useful ideas. The height of the car is untouched from the sixties and is at a nicely drivable moderately low level in today's harsh lowering climate on the air-cooled VW stage.
-
General condition
Imagine restoring the car in its light green color and sewing up a neat cabriolet roof or maybe just leave it as is. Regardless, the condition is nothing to be ashamed of, but completing the project to a really nice original color-painted friend of the prototypes of the museums must seem extremely attractive for that air-cooled Volkswagen subculture.
