This Volkswagen Karmann Ghia Cabriolet was purchased in 1990 by a private importer in Bollnäs who brought the car home from Florida. The car was driveable but required a thorough overhaul, and the electrical system was gone through so that all functions would work as they should. Following the registration inspection, work was also carried out on, among other things, the heater boxes and steering linkages.
After the first Bug Run, the idea arose to give the car higher performance. In the spring of 1990, Micke Svens undertook a comprehensive engine overhaul in which the engine was rebuilt to two litres with very tight tolerances. It was equipped with, among other things, a Weber 44, 0.41 cylinder heads, an external oil filter and an electric fuel pump. Power is estimated at around 100 bhp, and according to the owner the car has been dyno tested at approximately 90–95 bhp at the wheels. The original parts that were replaced remain and are included, as is a new exhaust system.
Since the overhaul, the car has only covered approximately 20,000 km, mainly as a summer and beach car. It has been stored dry, with the exception of one or two years, and the rust damage present has not changed noticeably during the 36 years it has been in the same ownership. The car is in somewhat sorry condition but not impossible to restore. With will and knowledge, the car's condition can be raised several notches.
During autumn 2025, a comprehensive overhaul was carried out to make the car as roadworthy as possible, including new tyres, fuel hoses, spark plug wires and other rubber components. The windscreen mechanisms and fuel gauge sender were also replaced.
1974 was the final production year for the Karmann Ghia and only 1,041 cabriolets were manufactured. The Swedish agent never imported this model, which makes this car a very rare occurrence in Sweden.
This is not an original restored show car – but a personal and enjoyable-to-drive Karmann Ghia with a potent two-litre engine, a long ownership history and plenty of character.

It is a tough and characterful cabriolet with 36 years of ownership history, considerable soul, and an engine that gives the car the attitude its classic bodywork suggests.

Facts about the model
The graceful Karmann-Ghia managed to retain its fine basic forms but nevertheless lost some of its beauty towards the end. In 1970 the rear lights were enlarged and two years later came the large bumpers. In 1974 the last Karmann-Ghia was manufactured and the new Scirocco took over as Volkswagen's sportiest model.
The 1500 engine with 44 hp that arrived in 1967 was essentially the same as in the Type 3, but with a different cooling fan placement. The same year also brought disc brakes at the front, wider track at the rear, a compensating spring over the rear axle, a dual-circuit braking system and five-bolt rims instead of five. The semi-automatic Saxomat clutch was offered as an option in 1968, but never caught on because the car revved slightly higher.
