Renault Sport Spider 2.0 — 1998

The nineties' perhaps most surprising sports car from a marque that was then testing ideas and investing heavily in motorsport. This model also had its own single-make international racing series, Spider Trophy.

"A collector car from inception due to being an uncompromising sports car, manufactured only during a brief period and in limited numbers."

Description

It was delivered new by Volvo dealer Bil-Månsson in Laholm to its first owner in August 1999. In 2008 the owner's son took over the car and is the current owner. The mileage cannot be verified; the instrument display (which incidentally comes from Twingo) has pixel errors in the km setting and displays implausible figures in the miles setting. The timing belt was changed according to the service book and receipt in 2015, and an oil service was performed in 2020. The pixel error with a reversed 3 in the km display could be an 8 and thus indicate a mileage of approximately 80,000 km, but this is purely speculation and guesswork. The most recent approved inspection was carried out on 2023-08-29.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

Starts normally and sounds good. The clutch cable is stiff and makes the pedal very hard the last part of the way to the bottom. However, it shifts and drives fine as long as you fully disengage the clutch all the way. The car failed its most recent inspection in 2024 due to rusty rear trailing arms and has been in the garage since then. The owner has fitted adjustable Penske shock absorbers. He is looking for the valve cover badge.

  • Interior condition

Spartan and bare interior suited for open-air motoring in all weather conditions, with no convertible top. Normal wear consistent with the assumed mileage, as evidenced by the patina on the steering wheel. Uncertain function of the digital display.

  • Exterior condition

Small marks and stone chips from use. The car has been driven, quite simply.
The seatwell cover is missing. Aftermarket wheels with Hankook tyres from 2014 with good tread.

  • General condition

A fun representative from a manufacturer with considerable motorsport heritage, and this model would gladly confirm it if you wanted to ask. A specimen that requires some care. Replacing the rear wishbones isn't difficult, the challenge seems to be finding new spare parts. The clutch cable is probably easier, and verifying the mileage.

Facts about the model

The Renault Sport Spider was introduced at the Geneva Motor Show in 1995 and was manufactured in a limited edition between 1996 and 1999 in Dieppe, France. The model was created by Renault's newly established motorsport division, Renault Sport, both as a track racing car for the Spider Trophy marque series and as an extreme road-registered sports car. The car was built on an advanced and lightweight chassis made entirely of aluminium, which was clad with fibreglass body panels. This construction kept the total weight down to around 930 kilos. Power came from a mid-mounted two-litre engine with four-valve technology and 150 horsepower, a drivetrain with internal code FR7 that was fitted in other performance models, such as the Clio Williams and Megane 16V. Rear-wheel drive via a five-speed manual gearbox. The early versions lacked a windscreen entirely and were instead equipped with a windscreen deflector that required the driver to wear a helmet, but a version with a traditional windscreen and wiper was later introduced for better everyday use. The model completely lacked electronic aids such as power steering, ABS brakes and brake servo in order to provide as pure, mechanical and analogue a driving experience as possible. In total, only 1,726 examples of the Renault Sport Spider were manufactured, just over 20 of these came to Sweden and were sold by Volvo dealers.
