"An affordable and unusual Italian car, and certainly enjoyable to drive with its adventurous 1980s character."

Description

It was registered for traffic in Sweden in June 1999. The register states that it is not imported, but it is likely that it is. It was used and ridden by a couple of different owners until 2013 when a new owner took over. He had an idea about a café-racer and began to disassemble the bike. After that it stood with all parts intact. When the current owner visited his workshop, he saw the bike, asked about it and purchased it. He intended to restore it to original, but also got caught up in other things. A workshop manual is included plus a drive package and other small parts. The last approved inspection was carried out on 2013-05-16.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

The motorcycle has not been started for 10 years. Today it has no spark and the owner has not troubleshot further. Good brand on shock absorbers and steering damper.

  • Exterior condition

Appears to be original paint with fine patina. Handlebar grips and seat have suffered mouse damage. The bike is only assembled for photography, tank and seat are loose. During the previous disassembly, petrol spilled on the instrument cluster warning lights and melted the plastic slightly. Pirelli tyres front and Metzeler rear with good tread.

  • General condition

A relatively straightforward project to get on the road quickly if, for example, the ignition components for the engine are easy to source.

Facts about the model

The Moto Morini 500 R (often marketed as part of the Sei-V or Sport series during this era) represents a fascinating turning point for the prestigious Italian motorcycle manufacturer Moto Morini. The model has its origins in the marque's legendary modular engine architecture, where the acclaimed 350-cubic centimetre (3 ½) of the late 1970s was bored and stroked to a displacement of 478 cc to meet demand for greater power and improved roadholding. The air-cooled 72-degree V-twin engine with pushrods, Heron cylinder head and belt-driven camshaft produced around 42 to 46 horsepower. What distinguished the 1984 model was that it had matured technically by regaining the proper six-speed gearbox – after the early 500 models had temporarily been limited to five speeds due to concerns about the higher torque. In terms of styling, the 1984 version was characterized by the design trends of the era, with Moto Morini attempting to meet the fierce competition from Japanese manufacturers by replacing classic chrome details with sharper lines, black plastic components, cast aluminium wheels and more integrated fairings. Although the machine suffered from a certain power deficit compared to the Japanese four-cylinder performance monsters of the time, it was appreciated for its fine handling characteristics, light weight, good fuel economy and stable Marzocchi suspension. Moto Morini, however, suffered from economic difficulties in the early 1980s and production was severely limited, making the 500 model from 1984 a rare and characterful Italian cult classic today.
