Description

It was delivered new to its first owner in June 1957, grandfather Vilho. The ownership history remained within three generations until the current owner bought the car in 2019. Grandfather Vilho’s son took over the car in the early 1980s and restored it from the ground up, starting with a bare and stripped body shell. During the restoration, the previous owner – the third generation – was strictly instructed to be careful during visits to the garage where his father was restoring the PV. This gave him a deep respect for the car; he drove it carefully for a few years before selling it to the current owner in 2019.

The current owner is now selling the car because he lost the sight in one eye just a month after purchasing it. He managed to drive with one eye during the 2020 season, but that was during the pandemic, with no meets or activities in the classic car scene. That led to a sense of blues and a kind of anticlimax when he became completely blind in 2021. Since then, the car has essentially been standing still, apart from a few small annual exercise drives with his son behind the wheel. In the short video clip, he can be seen riding along contentedly, urging his son to add a bit more driving spirit.

The latest and last inspection was carried out on 2018-04-23.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The B16 engine starts easily and effortlessly, and the transmission, clutch, and brakes feel just as good. Controls, pedals, levers, and steering wheel all work smoothly together with the right resistance and feel.

  • Interior condition:

Nice and fresh upholstery with stylish red tartan details on the door panels and seats. The headliner is original, intact and in good condition, with a normal appearance for its age. Good and newer carpets.

  • Exterior condition:

Beautiful green paint in the original color code 47, Emerald Green. Neat undercarriage with a small visible repair. A pleasant detail that isn’t immediately noticeable, but makes a big difference for the driving experience (and for the appearance to those who appreciate fine tires), is the newly manufactured Michelin XZX tires. They are not cheap today, but the Michelin X radial tire and its successors were a high-quality and forward-looking choice for car owners in the 1960s, making them period-correct for a 444. The spare wheel, however, is fitted with a classic cross-ply tire.

  • General condition:

Pleasant and charming impression, representative and practical for both utility and enjoyment. The feeling of occasionally using a vintage people’s car in everyday life, and not only at meets and rallies, brings a special driving joy for those who appreciate such things.

Facts about the model

Color code 47 Emerald Green was introduced by Volvo in 1957 and was one of the more elegant paint options. The emerald green shade has a deep, dark green tone with a classic 1950s character – sober yet vibrant in sunlight. The combination of the color and the chrome details gave the cars an exclusive appearance, appreciated by buyers who wanted something more than the usual black or gray tones.
