Volvo 1800 S B20 — 1969

A particularly desirable model year, introduced with the stronger B20 engine and twin carburetors. Unique to 1969, it combined chrome trim, an aluminum dashboard with the classic instruments, and newly added headrests. What makes this example even more sought-after is its original Medium Blue finish—a very rare and striking color for the 1800S

"This car ticks all the boxes: renovated bodywork and repaint, fully mechanically reviewed, long-term ownership by a passionate lady and member of the 1800 Owners Club, complete ownership history, and extensive receipts documenting the work carried out."

Description

The car was sold new in Sweden and has had a total of seven recorded owners. Since 1978 it has remained in the same family. In its early years it was used in Aneby, Småland (with the first two years in Västra Götaland) before settling around Jönköping from 1978 onwards. The current owner received the car as a gift from her father upon passing her driving test, and it has since become an important part of the family’s history.

Between 2018 and 2019, the car underwent a comprehensive renovation carried out by skilled specialists. In the autumn of 2018, Mats Bomberg stripped the body down to bare metal, repaired any rust, and prepared it for a professional repaint by Kindbom in Jönköping. In June, Erik Andrén overhauled the engine, lifting the cylinder head and replacing cylinder no. 2, along with many other worn components. The upholstery was renewed by Arne Johansson at Norel AB in Aneby.

The restoration was completed in 2019, and at its inspection the same year it received a “5 Star” sticker from Bilprovningen, confirming the car was in excellent condition. It is accompanied by extensive receipts documenting the renovation work, though earlier records were unfortunately lost when the owner’s father passed away. Since then, the car has been carefully enjoyed during summer months at local car events and Volvo meets, always properly stored in a garage over the winter.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The car runs and drives well, with a sound engine, smooth gearbox, functioning overdrive, and reliable brakes. As it hasn’t been properly driven during the past year, a basic service and fresh fuel are recommended. Like many similar cars, it takes a few minutes to warm up properly. All gauges are working except for the water temperature gauge, which could be due to either the gauge itself or the thermostat. Oil pressure is good while driving. The car sits on nice wheels with hubcaps and good tyres, and it is inspection-exempt.

  • Interior condition:

Interior is very clean and well preserved. The light leather seats are in excellent, undamaged condition, complemented by matching leather door cards and panels. Carpets, headliner, and dashboard are all tidy and free from damage, with all original gauges present. The period radio remains fitted but is not in working order. The passenger window winder handle simply needs to be refitted with a holding clip. The boot area is clean and orderly, complete with a toolkit and an older spare wheel.

  • Exterior condition:

Bodywork is straight and undamaged, with well-fitting panel gaps and nicely aligned sills. The only minor note is that the driver’s door could benefit from a small adjustment for perfect alignment. There is no rust anywhere on the body. The underbody is very clean with no signs of damage or corrosion, though there is some slight overspray visible on the petrol tank. Chrome trim all around is bright and shiny, with only a few small spots of oxidation on the front and rear bumpers. The paintwork presents very well—bright and glossy—with just a light scratch on the rear left wing.

  • General condition:

This is an ideal car for a Volvo enthusiast who wants something ready to enjoy right away. Apart from a routine service, nothing else is needed, and it’s prepared to provide many years of driving pleasure. Finding another 1800 in Medium Blue is exceptionally rare, making this example a truly special opportunity.
