"Almost feels too good to be driven flat out in historic racing. This car would fit just as well in a collection or for demonstrations. Great care has been taken to build it correctly according to the period’s special tricks and regulations. Approved as Appendix K and ready to compete."

Description

Completely newly built vintage rally car, homologated according to Appendix K. The builder has invested a great deal of time and resources into the car. The project took five years to complete, as it was carried out in his spare time, with the greatest challenge being to source the correct parts. Two donor cars were used in the process.

The builder has a long background in rallying. During the 1970s and 80s, he competed in rally, rallycross, and ice racing, and later drove in the VOC (Volvo Original Cup) for 15 years. Five years ago, he decided to create a true nostalgia car. In addition to looking authentic, it also had to be competitive within the period regulations. Unfortunately, the build dragged on and the car is now being sold due to health reasons.

The car has only competed in one event and there are many detailed photos documenting the build. Virtually everything is new.

Fully reinforced body shell, front and rear frame rails

Safari front suspension, reinforced shock absorber mounts

Rear axle 4.88 with limited slip differential, all new

New bushings front and rear

Bilstein shock absorbers and new rally springs

Reinforced front anti-roll bar; rear anti-roll bar included but not fitted

New discs and calipers, brake balance bar

Finess roll cage

Engine (B20)

First oversize bore 0.10"

Forged pistons (Custom Piston) and stress-relieved cylinders

TG 964 camshaft on new steel core

Polished and weight-matched connecting rods

Balanced crankshaft and lightened flywheel

Cylinder head with 44/37 mm valves, modified combustion chambers, intake and exhaust ports, reinforced pushrods

Twin Solex 45 carburetors

Additional equipment includes a reinforced aluminium sump guard and Bosch “big knick” auxiliary driving lamps.

The car also comes with so-called rally service stands (for use in the service area), see photo.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The car is powered by a Volvo B20 engine with a first oversize bore of 0.10". It features forged Custom Piston pistons and stress-relieved cylinders, a TG 964 camshaft on a new steel core, polished and weight-matched connecting rods, a balanced crankshaft, and a lightened flywheel. The cylinder head is fitted with 44/37 mm valves, modified combustion chambers and intake and exhaust ports, along with reinforced pushrods. It runs on twin Solex 45 carburetors, and the output is estimated at around 170 horsepower.

The gearbox is a 4-speed M40, though not close-ratio. The front suspension is a so-called “Safari” type, a concept originally developed by Volvo’s competition department. The rear axle is a new 4.88 unit with limited-slip differential. Both front and rear suspension are equipped with new bushings, Bilstein shock absorbers, and new rally springs. A reinforced front anti-roll bar is mounted, while the rear bar is included but not installed. Braking is handled by new discs and calipers, together with a brake balance bar.

  • Interior condition:

Strictly business. Lacking any form of soundproofing. The roll cage is built by the Swedish company Finess. Instrumentation in GT style with analogue gauges. FIA-approved rally seats and harnesses. Period sports steering wheel.

  • Exterior condition:

Unusually fine for a rally car, which of course is due to it being completely newly built according to the original recipe. No crash damage to the bodywork – see photos. It has only been driven in one competition. The body shell is fully reinforced, with strengthened front and rear frame rails as well as reinforced shock absorber mounts. Equipped with a reinforced aluminium sump guard, relocated fuel tank, and more.

  • General condition:

This is what a Volvo rally car looked like in the early 1970s. Period correct in every way and as close as you can get to the feeling, smell, and sound of rallying in those days.

Facts about the model

Appendix K is an international competition class for older cars, both two- and four-wheel drive. In Sweden, the cars must have been manufactured no later than 1990. The class is divided into several smaller categories depending on engine displacement and age. The cars must be approved according to FIA regulations, which are based on the rules from the era when the cars originally competed. However, some rules are more “modern,” particularly the safety regulations, which are almost identical to those in other national classes.

It is Appendix K-homologated cars that compete in the popular Midnight Sun Rally. Popular cars in Appendix K include the Ford Escort, Saab V4, Volvo PV and Amazon, Opel Ascona A/B, Volvo 140, Audi Quattro, among others.

(In 2024, FIA announced plans to introduce a new class for historic racing that will cover model years 1991 to 2000.)
