Saab 9-3 Aero Cabriolet 1,9 TTiD Cabriolet (Vehicle for repair) — 2009

A neat and presentable car with continental European history. Saab’s last convertible model in a beautiful white and blue color combination. Sold as a repair project due to building pressure in the cooling system. It starts and runs but can only be driven a short distance because of this.

"A desirable model and always the right choice—Saabs without a roof are sought after. Here offered as a suitable project car for a mechanic or Saab enthusiast. Most likely a defective head gasket."

Description

This car was delivered new in Italy, later imported to Germany, and arrived in Sweden in the spring of 2023. Some German documentation is included, but otherwise its history is unknown. In generally well-kept condition, consistent with the mileage. Clean and tidy both inside and out, with no significant faults. Simply a car that looks good.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The car is sold as a repair project since the engine builds pressure in the cooling system. The engine starts and sounds normal, but due to the pressure, coolant is lost and the engine overheats, requiring shutdown. In this condition, it may also enter fail-safe “limp-home” mode. A full diagnostic has not been carried out, but according to a consulted workshop (Auto Center Väst, Djupedlsliden 1 in Bohus), this indicates either a blown head gasket or possibly an issue with the turbo. However, it could also be another fault.

Note! The video of the car was made before the current engine issue became apparent. The car can now only be driven a short distance. The owner has chosen to sell it with the engine defect as-is. For more information, please contact inspector Michael Luft at +46 708 2021134.

The twin-turbo diesel engine, when operating correctly, is both efficient and economical, and enjoyable in combination with the automatic transmission. It was a well-regarded engine when introduced. The car comes with two keys, but unfortunately no service book.

  • Interior condition:

Well-kept leather upholstery, recently treated with leather care. Otherwise showing normal wear. The air conditioning works well and blows cold.

  • Exterior condition:

Recently treated paintwork in well-kept condition, finished in a summery white. The dark blue soft top is flawless with no notable damage. Attractive original wheels fitted with good tires.

  • General condition:

A sensible project car for someone with knowledge of Saab engines. The lack of documentation and history is offset by a solid overall impression. In summary, once repaired it offers both enjoyable usability and the charm of a fun collector’s car.

Facts about the model

Saab’s first convertible model, launched in 1986, was a major sales success—especially in the important U.S. market. For a convertible, it was unusually refined and comfortably seated four, which set a new trend and made it popular as a year-round car. By the late 1990s, the model had become something of a “favorite car of the in-crowd” in the U.S. This success continued with the new body style, which became the 9-3 until 2003, when it was replaced by the generation and model now offered for sale. The car in question is from the final version, with the updated front introduced in 2009, and the model was produced until 2012.

Production of Saab convertibles shifted locations over the years. Initially they were built by Valmet in Finland. The second-generation 9-3 convertibles, however, were assembled by Magna-Steyr in Austria. During the last production years, assembly moved back to Trollhättan, though the very final 2012 model year was put together in Nyköping. This particular car was built in Trollhättan, sold new in Italy, and imported to Sweden in 2022.

Today, all Saab convertibles are popular collector’s cars, being both enjoyable to drive and equipped with well-insulated soft tops and lively engines. The final model years are the most desirable and are expected to rise steadily in value year by year.
