Description

This car rolled off the assembly line in Abingdon on October 14, 1935, and was in use until 1964, then in Scotland. Nearly ten years later, in 1973, Swedish automotive figure and journalist Åke Borglund purchased the car in Milton Keynes during a ‘car hunt’ in England and brought it to Sweden. Once here, disassembly began in preparation for restoration, but he lost interest and sold the car. The chassis was renovated, and the engine was sent back to England, where the renowned MG MMM guru Colin Tiesch took on the engine work. A new ash/aluminum body frame and a variety of parts, including instruments and wheels, were sourced from MG MMM supplier Barry Walker. Seats and interior were crafted by Mike Collingburn in the UK. After a few ownership changes and still far from complete, the current owner acquired the car on June 9, 1991, when it was a ‘rolling chassis’ with the engine installed and the newly restored body frame loosely mounted. Even then, there were some challenges, including family growth and a house extension, but the car remained in the owner’s possession. Slowly but surely, he worked on the car, and on May 22, 2001, the car was finally ready for inspection. As is often the case with a comprehensive restoration, there was some post-work needed, as a vintage car requires occasional tinkering and updates. Today, it is a well-functioning and charming 1930s car with some updates, such as an electric cooling fan and a modern alternator, to minimize operational issues. For over 20 years, the owner and his family have attended both specific MG gatherings and other motor events, always well-received. The car comes with extensive documentation, including the ‘build sheet,’ original registration certificates, and history from its time in the UK to its years in Sweden and the restoration process. Many well-known names from the vintage motor hobby scene of the 60s, 70s, and 80s appear in the records. Additionally, useful MG literature is included. Door and body panels in vinyl and celluloid in poor condition are also part of the package. The car is ready to drive and spread joy to a new owner and an admiring community

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Starts easily and runs smoothly in both the engine and drivetrain. Stable and good oil pressure. Other mechanical functions, such as steering, clutch, shifting, and brakes, work well. The unsynchronized gearbox requires a bit of getting used to. The mechanical brakes need some planning ahead. There’s a slight play in the right front wheel hub. Test driving in the old residential area from the 1910s and 1920s was a delightful experience. Although not inspected on a lift, there was a good opportunity to examine the underside, which looked in good condition.

  • Interior condition:

Very nice interior with seats, rear bench, and door panels beautifully renovated. The steering wheel, controls, and instruments are in excellent condition, and everything works. The wiper motor is a bit weak. All mechanical parts and details, including pedals, gear lever, and mechanism, are both aesthetically pleasing and functional.

  • Exterior condition:

The paintwork remains in fine and glossy condition after the restoration. There are small cracks on the right front fender and a dent on the right rear fender and door. Chrome, glass, and lighting details, as well as emblems, are in excellent condition. The right turn signal semaphore struggles to lift fully. The wire wheels and nuts are in great shape, as are the tires. The soft top, frame, and soft top cover, along with the full tonneau cover, are all in good condition. The engine bay is very well-presented with beautiful details and reliable functionality.

  • General condition:

M.G., four-seater tourer, with a striking color combination, large wire wheels, high-gloss finish, and rich detailing, along with a thorough and authentic restoration and an intriguing history—this car stands out as a delightful classic and a vehicle of significant motor historical interest.

Facts about the model

Morris Garages (MG) was founded by W.R. Morris. He initially sold bicycles and later expanded into automobiles. From 1913, he manufactured cars under his own name, Morris Motor Company. At the same time, he maintained Morris Garages as a separate company, and from 1924, he began selling Morris cars with tuned engines and special bodies as MG cars.

During the 1930s, several models were produced, named using letter designations, including the J-type and P-type. The PA model was introduced in 1934 with a stronger chassis and engine than its predecessor, the J-type, and in 1935, the PB was released with a larger engine, now 939 cm³, dual SU carburetors, and 43 hp. According to records, 521 PB models were produced, of which only 99 were four-seaters. In 1935, W.R. Morris also sold MG to the Nuffield Organization. In 1968, MG became part of British Leyland, and by 1980, it was all over. However, the brand lived on with Rover and later BMW, but in 2005 it was once again the end. Now, however, Nanjing Automobile Group has revived the MG name. But that’s a completely different story.
