Discreet and road-legal with a stronger engine. Only gently and period-correctly refined. Additionally, it has an interesting history.

"Professionally built for sporty driving and reliability, while maintaining high finish on all details."

Description

The car was manufactured in the fall of 1964 for the US market, where all PVs at this time were in Sport trim. The original color was graphite gray. The car had three owners in the USA, all in California. In 2011, it was purchased by Volvo collector Martin Scholtz from the MTI company in Long Beach. Martin S had been searching for a fresh untouched PV to mechanically upgrade in order to fulfill an old dream; specifically, to participate in the historic Carrera Panamericana rally (320 miles), which was resumed in 1988 (for cars from the 1950s and 1960s).

The car received a brand new, professionally prepared and tuned B20 engine with S-cam, E-top, and new larger twin carburetors and intake (see specs in the last images). In addition, a larger radiator, oil cooler, extra temperature sensors, tachometer, etc., were added. The chassis was reinforced with larger front brakes, strong anti-roll bars front and rear, and Bilstein shock absorbers. To this was added American racing rims with Volvo's bolt pattern and 205/60R tires. Once the technical work was completed, the car underwent test drives. Afterwards, all removable parts on the body were dismantled and then repainted in the current gray color (slightly lighter than Volvo's graphite gray). This shade was chosen to match the Carrera Panamericana stripes on the car. After painting, fenders and lights were installed, but the project stalled due to the owner's illness. The car stood partly dismantled for several years until it was sold in 2018 to the current owner in Sweden. They had heard about the car via the Volvo Owners Club California. The car was taken to Sweden, completed, and registered in the spring of 2023. Since then, it has been driven and displayed at various events. It offers great driving pleasure with a zippy engine, precise shifts, good handling, and brakes. Plus, the transmission is quiet, which is unusual even for renovated PV cars. The engine produces up to 150 hp and is registered with a power output of 120 hp (compared to the original 90).

The gentlemen who completed and tested the car are two retirees who spent much of their careers at Volvo. One of them even worked on assembling the very last PV cars at the end of 1965, and the other worked for several years at Volvo's experimental workshop. In Sweden, they changed the carburetors to dual Weber 45s, had the speedometer renovated, installed a new interior ceiling, and sport seats with seat belts. Since most parts are new, they reset the odometer. After this, the car has been driven 32 kilometers. (In the USA, the car had covered just under 100,000 miles, which is 16700 Swedish kilometers, before the renovation). In conclusion, this is a rare opportunity to purchase an unusually exciting, well-built, and enjoyable PV to drive.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Built using well-known Volvo components. Just the engine with its associated equipment has cost more than 200,000 SEK. Fully roadworthy and approved in this configuration.

  • Interior condition:

Whole and beautiful inside. Near mint condition, with a new ceiling and carpets, etc. The door panels are original, which shows that the car was well-maintained before it was renovated.

  • Exterior condition:

The bodywork and paint are in a very neat and representative condition. The car has been in a dry climate, which is why it has exceptionally avoided rust. The car has not been race-driven and has not been damaged in traffic either. The bodywork is not modified anywhere. New rubber seals and bumpers in stainless steel. Oil cooler is located behind the grill in the front. The car was painted almost 10 years ago, so there are some minor scratches, but nothing noticeable. A machine polishing is recommended. It would restore the shine to peak condition.

  • General condition:

Neat, solid, and built for street use. But also suitable for regularity rallies in its current condition.

Facts about the model

A PV 544 Sport was the 60s counterpart to the late 70s Golf GTI - a performance version of a family car, a dream for many young people. The B18D engine in the Sport version produced 90 horsepower (the same number as in the Porsche 356/912), and the twin SU carburetors created beautiful music when accelerating. This PV 544 Sport is an “E”, which for PV enthusiasts indicates that it is a 1964/65 model and thus from the last production year. It rolled off the line at the Lundby factory in September 1964. In October 1965, the PV stopped being manufactured.
