Volvo Duett 210 B18 — 1963

This Duett 210 showcases a delightful, untouched patina that deserves to be preserved as a testament to its originality – as they say, "it's only original once." The fact that it runs and drives flawlessly without any problems further emphasizes the idea that not everything needs renovating.

"It's amazing how well these vintage Volvos still function, especially the Duett, which was a staple for tradespeople and families in 1960s Sweden. The car has been well maintained by five loving owners. It has new brakes all around, was just serviced, and drives fantastically. It is also exempt from inspection/MOT for the duration of its life."

Description

From what I have seen, it's an unrestored Volvo Duett. However, it has patina, such as minor dents, and old touch-ups here and there on the car. It runs well, and the brakes are new all around. It has been recently serviced and inspected for life. The upholstery is intact and in good condition, though there are some marks on the interior roof and door panels. There's a driving log, and according to that, the odometer has been replaced, and the car has now covered approximately +260,000 km Some inspection documents are available since the early 2000s, along with two sets of keys and only 5 owners from new.

The first owner was a contractor in Ljungby in Småland. He was meticulous with the car, and even at delivery, Volvo in Ljungby provided a customized solution. Since the car was parked at construction sites, the contractor wanted to leave the keys in the car to avoid losing them on site. Volvo modified the ignition so that the car couldn't be started, only the ignition turned on. Behind the instrument panel, there was a hidden start button for Volvo BM tractors. Since tools were stored in the cargo area and the car was left unlocked with the keys inside, a simple bracket for a padlock was installed on the rear doors. Apart from following Volvo's maintenance instructions, the owner took the car to Volvo once a year for a thorough checkup, especially since the car was used extensively on various construction projects. This paid off, as the car mostly retains its original paintwork to this day, with touch-ups done only when it was cared for by Volvo in Ljungby.

When the car was no longer needed at the company, it was transferred to the contractor's sister in 1975, making her the second owner. When it was time for her nephew to get his driver's license, the contractor wanted him to take over the car, but a Volvo Duett for an 18-year-old perhaps wasn't his dream car, so he declined.

That's when the fire chief in Habo heard about the Duett through his girlfriend, who knew the contractor's sister. So the car was registered under the girlfriend's name in 1997, making her the third owner. The car was used as an enthusiast vehicle, attending vintage car meets. During this time, the car was only serviced and maintained in its used condition. When the owner retired, he moved to Spain with his girlfriend, leaving the Duett behind. The car was then advertised in the PV Club's magazine.

When the previous owner bought the Duett in 2000, he became the fourth owner. The initial plan was to continue using the car in its beautifully weathered state as an enthusiast vehicle. He did so for three summers, after which he parked it in a garage at Mala Bil with the intention of eventually restoring it completely. However, other things came up, and his interest eventually faded. In the spring of 2023, he sold the car to me.

In 2001, Volvo Cars borrowed the car from the previous owner for the company's 75th-anniversary celebration. The car was used to chauffeur Ford's then-Chairman Georg Nasher and the record holder, American Erwin Gordon, who had driven the longest distance with a Volvo P1800. They were shuttled between the hotel and the anniversary event, as well as around Gothenburg and Volvo's facilities.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

As mentioned, the car has been recently serviced and runs well. However, the temperature gauge isn't working, and the front door seals are dry. The engine bay is clean, wheels and tires are good, and the radio functions. Newer rear tail lights have been fitted years ago.

  • Interior condition:

The interior is complete with nice front and rear seats, accompanied by good rubber floor mats. The door cards are well-preserved, with a minor hole in the rear panel. The tidy headliner has a small hole in the center, and the interior smells fresh. The boot space features attractive wooden paneling. It's a delightful space to sit and enjoy.

  • Exterior condition:

The car features a wonderful patina finish and style, free from rust but with minor dents and touch-ups as shown in the pictures. Some parts, like the front wing and rear side window, have been partly repainted in the past. There are a few rust blisters, including one near the headlight on the front wing, and some scattered around. The chrome details and trims are in good condition, except for a slight dent on the left rear bumper. The older windscreen has a couple of stone chips, and there's older sealer along the roof edges.

  • General condition:

You've got an amazing, problem-free car that can be enjoyed for years to come. It should definitely be preserved in its current condition, as everyone admires its charm.
