"This classic car has been standing for recent years but should, without major work, be able to be brought back to drivable condition again. The question then becomes, where does the new owner want to set the bar? Fixing details and keeping it as original as possible or undertaking a more extensive renovation project. Either way, it's a nice carriage from the first year with the V4 engine."

Description

This car was registered for traffic in Sweden on April 5, 1967. The first owner was the current owner's father. The son took over the car in January 1983. The car has never been driven in the winter and mostly traveled round-trip to summer locations in Kisa and Tiveden. For the most part, the car has been stored in a garage. The car is in original condition and has always had seat covers. The backrest on the passenger side has been replaced to add a headrest, but the original is still available. Also, the original spare wheel, on the right rear, is still available. There is also a roof rack with wooden slats. The carburetor has been replaced with a Solex after a theft. The right front fender has been replaced after a minor accident. Lower edges on the doors have been replaced with economy sheet metal. The driver's door lock has been replaced. Keys are available. The exhaust pipe and rear muffler are newer.

A lot of Saab literature is included.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The car was not drivable during inspection, making it difficult to provide an accurate picture, but according to the current owner, there should be no major problems in getting the car up and running again for driving.

  • Interior condition:

Seat covers have been on since new, so the interior should be able to be restored to excellent original condition again. The backrest on the passenger side has been replaced, but the original is still available.

  • Exterior condition:

The car was dusty, but it seems that after a wash and polish, it can be restored to a nice, patinated "original condition." Work has been done on the car previously, but it's part of its history.

  • General condition:

A "barn find" from a 1960s garage. Complete and in the somewhat unusual Silversand color. The model year of 1967 is relatively rare today, which makes this an interesting classic. Additionally, with a known history involving father and son as owners, it becomes an intriguing enthusiast's car.

Facts about the model

The car business within SAAB was born in 1947, and the first model, the Saab 92, borrowed some design elements from the aviation industry. As the model 92 gradually evolved through various stages, becoming the model 96 from the 1960 model year, one could see traces from the 1940s while steamrolling into the 1960s with the 96. When SAAB launched the new 99, and later the 900, many believed it was the end for the 96, but like the Phoenix, new updates came over the years, and it persevered until the 1980s.

Over time, there were both significant and minor changes, so that when it was all said and done, you could place an early 92 next to an 80s model and see that not a single part was the same, yet there was still a clear resemblance.

In the mid-1960s, the 2-stroke engine felt somewhat outdated, and for the 1967 model year, news finally came of a new engine. It was a 1.5-liter V4 engine with 73 spirited horses from Ford that had the honor of "pulling the load". This resulted in a resurgence in sales of the 96 and 95 models. Additionally, the model was modernized with front disc brakes, an alternator, a stronger starter motor, and a battery with a larger capacity. The interior was also upgraded, and three-point seat belts became standard. Other features for the 1967 model and the V4 included a smaller windshield, which became 7 cm higher by 1968. In the years following 1967, there were even more upgrades, both significant and minor.

In January 1980, it was the final curtain call for the 96 era. The last car to leave the production line, on January 8th, was driven by Erik Carlsson to the Saab Museum in Trollhättan. The last cars were sold in the spring of 1980, with only 967 units registered in Sweden.

Altogether, according to information, 547,221 units of the 96 were manufactured.
