SAAB 96 Sport 2T — 1964

The Saab Sport was a car for those who wanted more horsepower, sportier interior, and a tougher exterior. The year 1964 is particularly appreciated by enthusiasts as it is the last model year of the 96 before the long-nose version.

"A renovated and ready-to-drive Saab Sport 1964. It brings real joy to see the car. Imagine if, as an inspector, you could buy the nicest cars you inspect. Then this one would be on my driveway now. There's a note about the paint, otherwise no remarks. Inspection and tax exempt according to Swedish vintage car regulations."

Description

The car belonged to a well-known figure in the rally community associated with Saab, who, in his retirement years, renovated and collected rarer Saab models. He passed away a few years ago, and the Saab Sport 64 is being sold by Bilweb Auctions on behalf of his relatives. The car was purchased new in 1964 by a lady in Örebro. It was assigned the registration number T40145. After 2 years, the owner traded it in at the VM Bilar dealership in Örebro. In 1969, the car was deregistered and believed to be scrapped. In 1983, it was rescued by a Saab collector in Örebro. In 2014, the car was purchased and renovated by the late Saab enthusiast Willy. He spent 2 years renovating it and re-registered the car in 2016. Willy was a meticulous person who invested a lot of time and money in his renovations. This Sport 64 is in very good renovated condition. Willy had a habit during his Saab renovations of having the speedometer renovated and reset by an instrument expert. This way, one knew exactly how many miles the car had traveled after the renovation. In this case, the car has traveled 4720 km. We do not know the total mileage since 1964, but the distance after the renovation is most relevant in this context.

Everything on the car is of high quality, and Willy was very meticulous about the correct details, which can be seen in the pictures. Unfortunately, the car's paintwork does not reach the same high overall level. Misunderstand me correctly. The paint is very glossy and nice, charming any car enthusiast. It's not bad, but the groundwork hasn't been fully completed. There are some slight variations, a few pores, some dust particles, a few depressions, and some areas where even more time could have been spent on the groundwork. Possibly, we are being overly picky here, as this is barely noticeable in photographs. (An example is shown in the video)

With this clarified, the car as a whole can really be recommended. We know from previous renovations carried out by the late owner that he had a habit of renovating the entire drivetrain. Considering the car's fine engine sound and driving experience, we believe it is likely that he did the same here. In addition to the spare wheel, fan belt, and tools, the car comes with an instruction book, spare bulb case, records from Swedish vehicle inspection, and a specially ordered mat to protect the floor of the car. Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The engine features triple carburetors and separate oil lubrication. Saab stated the power output at 54 horsepower with this configuration. It starts easily and sounds just right. Good power in the engine, smooth gear shifts, and no issues noted during test driving.

  • Interior condition:

The interior is in incredibly good condition. We're not exactly sure which parts are original and which are newly sewn, but it's beautiful. It's unlikely that you could find a nicer interior on a 96. Equipped with 2-point seat belts.

  • Exterior condition:

Nice and glossy paintwork. (See note in the description.) Neat exterior with fine details. Fine bumpers and chrome trim. The chrome trim around the rear window needs attention at the top center. See pictures.

  • General condition:

Very nicely restored Sport 64. Overall, it maintains a very high quality.

Facts about the model

The Saab Sport was a special model of the Saab 96 introduced in 1962 as a replacement for the Saab GT750. The Sport model was presented at the Stockholm Motor Show in February 1962. This was the first time Saab's sporty Gran Turismo car was sold in Sweden since the GT750 was never officially sold in Sweden. It had the same body as the Saab 96 but with different interior and equipment. The rear seat was a simpler version, with plenty of space in special compartments at the bottom for rally equipment, such as spare parts and snow chains. On the outside, the difference from the standard 96 was the dual chrome strips along the lower part of the body, the additional lights, and the different hubcaps. The engine was an 841 cubic centimeter three-cylinder two-stroke engine with three Solex carburetors, providing 52 horsepower compared to the standard 38. The engine was lubricated via a separate oil tank, eliminating the need to manually mix oil with gasoline (as in the standard model). The gearbox had four gears. The Saab Sport also featured front disc brakes, which was unusual at the time. The wheels had four bolts instead of five as on the standard 96. In markets like the USA, the car was called the GT850 (analogous to the earlier 750), but after Saab's successes in the Monte Carlo Rally, the designation was changed to Monte Carlo 850 from 1964 onwards. The Sport model evolved alongside the regular Saab 96. It's worth noting that the tuned engine disappeared with the introduction of the four-stroke engine in the 1967 model year. The model was then called the Monte Carlo V4 and differed only in terms of equipment from the standard model.
