"A neat 1930s car with modest performance, easy to drive and handle despite its age and design."

Description

The car’s history prior to the late 1960s is unknown. The left-hand-drive configuration may indicate that it was delivered new in Sweden or the neighboring countries. In any case, it was purchased around 1968–69 by engineer K-Å Ericsson from Umeå from a certain Kent Rylander. According to accounts, K-Å preferred working on his Morris rather than socializing with his fellow conscripts during his military service in those years.

There is extensive documentation from Ericsson’s ownership during the 1970s, including photographs, receipts, and correspondence. Ericsson began a restoration; the car was then taken over by Hortlund in Tavelsjö outside Umeå, and later passed on to Jan Olin in Ljungby in 1987, who continued the work, mainly focusing on the wooden body structure. Olin also carried out a preliminary registration, and the car received its registration number in 1989.

The current owner acquired the car in 2013 from his father, who had completed the restoration. More extensive research into the car’s earlier life can be carried out through searches in the National Archives. The most recent approved inspection was carried out on 2017-03-30, at which time the car was also registration-inspected following Olin’s preliminary registration (the equivalent at the time of today’s origin verification).

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

All mechanical systems are in good working order. It features a 6-volt electrical system and a side-valve engine of just over 900 cc producing 23 hp. The engine starts easily, and the three-speed gearbox is relatively easy to operate. Semaphore turn indicators were fitted in the early 1970s.

  • Interior condition:

Attractive, professionally upholstered interior by a saddler in Skåne. The carpets, door panels, and the metal-and-carpet trim for the luggage compartment are of the same high standard.

  • Exterior condition:

Presentable and relatively recent paintwork—recent at least in the context of the car’s age—applied during the restoration around 15 years ago. There are a few small filler/primer bubbles on the wings. A smart, intact, and clean soft top with clip-on side screens/weather protection. Mice have nibbled somewhat on the storage bag and, as a result, also slightly on the edges of one side’s side screen and weather panel (see photos).

Correct Avon cross-ply tyres with good tread, fitted to fine original wire wheels.

  • General condition:

A charming representative in nicely restored condition from the automobile’s youthful decades. Not the car’s infancy, but still its youth in the sense of a wooden body frame, slender wire wheels, and modest engine output—yet already showing an emerging technical curiosity, with wartime pressures accelerating development that would later fully blossom in the post-war era.

Facts about the model

The Morris 8 was introduced in 1935 as a small, affordable car for the British market and as a response to the success of Ford’s Model Y. It was intended to be simple, economical, and easy to own during the interwar period, when demand for small cars increased sharply.

The Roadster version, produced between 1936 and 1938, was an open two-seater with a light body and a sportier appearance than the closed models. The 1937 model year was a Series 1, fitted with a four-cylinder side-valve engine of 918 cc producing around 23 hp. This provided modest performance but also low fuel consumption.

The Morris 8 Roadster proved popular with younger buyers and enthusiasts who wanted an inexpensive open car for both practical use and enjoyment.
