"Top of the line model in need of renovation."

Description

The owner before the current owner purchased the Mercedes in 1985. He spent a lot of time and effort on its renovation and painting. The current owner bought the car in 2020 and owned it until 2022 when a friend of his bought the car. Under the friend's ownership, the Mercedes mostly remained stationary and during that time, the lists on the thresholds were stolen. Now, the car has been reunited with the current owner again. He has renovated the rims and installed new tires, and also replaced the distributor cap and rotor. The car was inspected but did not pass, and the owner does not have the space or time to fix the issues. The issues include: triggered seatbelt tensioner for the right front seat (which the owner claims has been fixed), the left rear brake is dragging, the speedometer is unreadable in the dark, and the car battery mounting is deficient. It should also be noted that the engine was not running on all cylinders at the time of photographing, and it is uncertain what this is due to. The car comes with a set of keys.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The engine was not running on all cylinders at the time of the photography, (now on December 30, the owner reports that the engine is running on all cylinders after replacing the rotor and distributor cap). The car was not driven on the road as the weather conditions did not permit this due to slippery roads. The car failed the vehicle inspection; see the protocol among the pictures. It is not possible to turn off the heater in the car.

  • Interior condition:

The car's interior is in a normal condition considering the car's age and mileage. There are some minor damages on the car's front door panels, see pictures. The seats appear to be okay with some scuff marks and possibly a small hole or two. The armrest between the front seats has a hole. Otherwise, the interior looks tidy with signs of use.

  • Exterior condition:

The paint is in poor condition with blisters from spray fillers, typical of 80s and 90s paint jobs. The paint has also cracked on the doors, worst on the right side, see pictures. There is also some rust, see pictures. The trim on the sills is missing, and the waistline trim on the driver's door is included loose.

  • General condition:

A Mercedes that needs care. The engine needs to be inspected, and the car requires a new paint job to look good again.

Facts about the model

The Mercedes S-Class was introduced in September 1972 as the 280 S, 280 SE, and 350 SE. The car was built with passenger safety as the top priority. Its robust construction made it significantly heavier than its predecessor, the W108. The suspensions are considerably more modern than those on the W108/W109, derived from the W111. In most respects, it was considered an impressive vehicle, often referred to as "the best car in the world."

In March 1973, the 450 SE and the longer 450 SEL were added, featuring the long-stroke V8 engine previously sold only in the US market. European motor journalists were so impressed that they selected it as the Car of the Year 1974, an award usually given to much smaller and cheaper cars. The W116 came with steel wheels and hubcaps as standard equipment, but aluminum wheels (so-called Baroque wheels) were a popular accessory. The cars could be ordered with three different interior options: fabric, plush, or leather upholstery, with the latter two options featuring a different type of more ornate door panels. Production ceased in September 1980 after 466,011 units were built.
