Monark Cross 500cc — 1962

"Pinna" Bengt Ericsson, who won every junior event that year, raced this bike as a racing bike. It's a Lito cross motorcycle with a Monark frame that's more of a homeage bike.

"This bike has been in a collection in the Varberg area for many years. BWA has not tested the bike, but it appears to be in good condition."

Description

The bike was built in 1962 on a Monark frame with a Lito engine - that is, a refurbished and prepped Albin military motorcycle engine - inspired by the original Helsingborg Lito bikes. Bengt "Pinnen" Ericsson drove his competitors' jerseys and won every junior competition that year. In the early 1960s, he continued to race the bike in a number of races. The bike was construed as a Lito (small-scale maker of cross motorcycles 1961-67) by the most recent owner (estate), and there is now a Lito decal and a BSA 500 engine with a Lito cover on and in the frame. The former competition jerseys belonged to another driver in the Lito squad. The original engine was replaced many years ago, according to the family, and the bike was last ridden about 6-8 years ago. It is being sold on behalf of the owner's estate and has long been part of a collection in the Varberg area. Monark Cross was registered as N1305 in 1970, and FKM 275 was added to the record in 1973. It has since dropped off the register and hence requires a new registration examination.

Although the engine was not started by BWA, the brakes and gears functioned well, and the engine rolled over. A full start-up service and inspection will be required.

  • Exterior condition:

Given that it was raced, it is in generally good condition with a few scrapes and paint chips. A few tiny dings may be found on the tank.  Wheels and tires that are in good condition. Complete seat with a few stuffs

  • General condition:

Getting back on the road is straightforward with a proper registration inspection and servicing. The model is a replica in many aspects, yet it nevertheless has a strong competitive history.

Facts about the model

Lito's story is only a few pages long. From 1958 to 1965, Lito (short for Litoverken A.B of Helsingborg, Sweden) existed. Nonetheless, it had a big influence. Kaj Bornebusch, a teenage Swedish motocrosser, created the little Lito firm. He was the son of a lithographer who funded his family's quest to design and build their own race bike. Nonetheless, it is the story of three Swedish motorcycle manufacturers: Monark, Lito, and Husqvarna. Monark of Varberg, which specialized in bicycle, motorcycle, and moped engineering and was founded in 1908, hand-built an Albin-engined 498cc single scrambler (weighing 282lb), first with a BSA gearbox, then an AMC, that won the World Championship in 1959 with Sten Lundin riding (and came second the following year) – and then withdrew after the unexpected death of its team manager, Lennart Varborn. Lundin, on the other hand, was given his winning bike. Monark and Crescentbolagen amalgamated in 1961 to form Monark-Crescentbolagen.
