"The car was started using a booster and ran smoothly in both engine and gearbox during our short test drive. It presents well overall, though the body and interior show some wear. In summary, it can be described as being in used but normal, functional condition."

Description

The car was purchased in 2018 in the USA from Phil Newey’s Sports Cars in La Habra, California, by a Swedish car enthusiast. It was shipped to Gothenburg, serviced, and test-driven during the summers of 2019 and 2020. The car was registered in Sweden in September 2020 and was used during the fall and following spring, until the starter motor began acting up in the summer of 2021. Since then, it has been stored in a garage outside Gothenburg. The issue with the starter motor is intermittent — it only engages occasionally, though the car can still be bump-started when this occurs.

The model itself is delightful, with classic, elegant design — a long hood and a big engine. Its low weight, ample power, and large wheels and tires (205/70/15) all contribute to a distinctly sporty feel. The car handles well through corners and offers plenty of driving pleasure.

This particular example is in used, roadworthy condition, but the buyer will need to replace the starter motor and have the car inspected and approved before it can be driven again. Most systems appear to function properly, but no complete inspection has been performed due to the lack of a valid registration. Therefore, the car is being sold as a restoration or repair project.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The car was last serviced in 2019 and passed its technical inspection in 2020. It has remained unused since then. A starter service and a new starter motor are needed, and possibly a new battery as well. The current one takes a charge and shows just over 12 volts. We have not tested all switches and controls on the dashboard, but everything appears to be in working order. The engine bay and trunk also look clean and well kept.

The soft top can be easily folded down manually, and a cover for the folded top is included. The cockpit cover, or “tonneau,” is missing, but the mounting snaps are present on the body. New tires all around.

  • Interior condition:

Original interior showing normal wear. The carpets have been replaced at some point. The trim around the doors is slightly worn and loosely fitted.

  • Exterior condition:

Older repaint in the original color that looks decent overall but would benefit from a proper machine polish. The following issues were noted: left rear indicator lens is broken (see photo); small paint blisters on the left front fender near the headlight (see photo); a poorly repaired dent on the left rear fender, repainted with a slight color mismatch; minor damage on the right front fender behind the wheel — a dent with some surface rust (see photo).

The soft top is older, with a sun-faded, cloudy rear window and a tear in the fabric on the left side above the upper rear corner of the side window (see photo). Otherwise, the body appears to be in good condition. No rust found under the doors or on the hood and trunk. Panel gaps, seams, and surface alignment look good, apart from the repaired dent on the left rear fender.

  • General condition:

A great car for the handy enthusiast — it looks perfectly decent as it is, and with a bit of effort it could be back on the road for next season. With some starter motor work and a check at inspection, it’s ready for plenty of fun. Also ideal for what’s often called a “rolling restoration,” allowing you to tidy things up gradually over time.

A good place to start would be replacing the indicator lens and the soft top. For reference, we’ve included two images from the British TR6 specialist Rimmer Bros mail-order catalog. They offer nearly everything for TR6 models at very reasonable prices — for example, a complete new soft top costs around £400, plus shipping and VAT.

Facts about the model

The Triumph TR6 is a classic British sports car produced by the Triumph Motor Company between 1968 and 1976. It was sold worldwide and became especially popular in both the UK and the United States. The TR6 is celebrated for its combination of style, performance, and pure driving pleasure.

Here’s a brief overview of the Triumph TR6’s history:
The Triumph TR series began production in the 1950s and quickly gained popularity among sports car enthusiasts. The TR5, introduced in 1967, was the first in the line to feature a six-cylinder engine.

The Triumph TR6 was launched in 1968 as the successor to the TR5. Designed by Giovanni Michelotti, it featured a more muscular and aggressive look compared to its predecessors. The TR6 quickly became known for its strong performance and sporty character.

It was powered by a 2.5-liter six-cylinder engine producing between 106 and 150 horsepower, depending on version and market. The car could reach a top speed of around 200 km/h and delivered an engaging driving experience thanks to its rear-wheel-drive layout and well-balanced chassis.

The TR6 is easily recognized by its distinctive front grille, long bonnet, and classic sports car proportions. It was offered as a convertible and also with a fixed hardtop. The interior was simple yet functional, with a clear focus on the driver’s experience.

The TR6 was a major success in both the UK and the US, where it became known as an affordable yet exciting sports car. It was particularly popular in America, admired for its performance and timeless design.

In total, around 94,000 TR6s were produced between 1968 and 1976. Production ended in 1976 as Triumph shifted focus to other models amid changing market conditions and growing competition. The car in question is a U.S.-spec model from 1974, featuring the slightly larger bumpers with rubber overriders introduced for that market.
