Description

This car was first registered for traffic in Sweden on February 25, 1991. Initially, it had few owners/users, all of whom drove sparingly and took good care of the vehicle. While these individuals owned it, and for a few subsequent years, it was held by various companies, which is why the list of owners is considerably longer than the actual users. The current owner acquired the car in February 2021 after it had just over 100,000 kilometers on the odometer. As the car had been stationary for some years prior, he had a thorough inspection done and the tires changed. The car is now in fine, inspected, and drivable condition with an odometer reading of 109,730 kilometers. Included with the car are the original instruction manual, a filled-out service book, inspection protocols, and various receipts and documents. Two sets of keys and two blanks are also included.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Starts easily and runs smoothly in both the engine and drivetrain. During a gentle test drive in a residential area and on a main road, with acceleration to "legal speed limits" and braking, the ride felt calm and comfortable. Steering, automatic transmission, handling, and brakes all appear to function well. It hasn't been checked on a lift, but what could be seen looked good, and there were no comments on the undercarriage from the vehicle inspection.

  • Interior condition:

The interior is fine and comfortable, maintaining Mercedes' renowned quality. The seats have good resilience, and the door panels, wood details, and carpets are in great condition. The steering wheel, controls, instruments, and gauges are in excellent shape. All electrical systems are functional, and the AC provides cooling. There are some cracks in the plastic flooring behind the driver's seat, and the cover for the seat adjustment on the driver's door is slightly loose. The headliner on the HardTop has partially come loose. The Becker Mexico radio works well, as does the electric antenna. There is a CD holder in the center console, along with a wind deflector over the rear seats and a foldable screen for "neck draft" protection.

  • Exterior condition:

The paintwork is in excellent condition, likely original, as are the glass, chrome, rubber, plastic, emblems, trim, and lighting components. The HardTop is in great shape and well-sealed, with the electric functions for release and attachment, as well as the rear window, working perfectly. The soft top is also in excellent condition, and its electric folding and unfolding mechanism functions flawlessly. The rims are in great shape with newer Nokian tires. Both the engine bay and the trunk are in fine condition. The sound insulation under the hood was removed as it had partially come loose, but a newer, custom-fit sound insulation is included.

  • General condition:

At just over 30 years old, we have here a vehicle that decidedly steps into the category of a classic and enthusiast car. Moreover, a splendid Grand Routier where one can choose from open-air driving, temporary weather protection, or a comfortable coupe. In any case, it is well-equipped with the technology and options of its time, and everything works well. This, combined with its condition and mileage, ensures an interesting future for this vehicle.

Facts about the model

It's well-known that both the "Super" and "Sport" designations were included in the 1931 Mercedes SSKL—Super Sport Kompressor Leicht. However, whether the post-war Mercedes SL stands for "Super Leicht" or "Sport Leicht" depends on who you ask in the history of Mercedes.

What we do know is that the new 300 SL racer with its gullwing doors, introduced in 1952, eventually evolved into a more civilized street version produced from 1954 to 1957. When this version disappeared, Mercedes manufactured an open-top Roadster with the same performance and look from 1957 to 1963. At the same time, they also produced a calmer and more refined version of an SL in the R121 Mercedes 190 SL, made from 1955 to 1963.

When the successors to these two models were introduced, Mercedes only offered one version: the W113 Mercedes 230 SL, known as the Pagoda. Over the years, 250 SL and 280 SL versions were also produced, spanning from 1963 to 1971.

In April 1971, the Pagoda’s successor arrived, the R107 Mercedes 350 SL, powered by a 3.5 L V8 engine producing 200 hp. Both safety features and technology, as well as handling, were significantly improved over the previous model. The R107 continued production with minor changes through the years, and the final model was produced in 1989, marking the transition to the next generation, the R129.

The new SL model was introduced at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1988 and went into production in May of that year. The design is credited to Bruno Sacco. The first model year was listed as 1989, and production continued until the 2002 model year. As with every new Mercedes model, this one represented a major leap forward. In addition to tying back to the classic gullwing, Mercedes aimed to be a leader in new technology and exclusive design with this model. They also emphasized reconnecting their DNA with fast sports roadsters, luxurious coupés, and reliable sedans.

What was missing until now was the seemingly impossible combination of an aesthetically pleasing sports car that offered both performance and comfort along with high safety standards. This combination became possible with the new SL, as stated in their first brochure for the model. The text concluded: "Here, tradition meets innovation. Safety meets comfort. All at a high, indeed incomparable, level." The first models to be launched were the 300 SL-24 and the 500 SL. Over the years, engines ranged from straight-six to V6, V8, and even V12 variants. In the 1994 model year, the SL received a facelift, followed by another update for the 1996 model year, and a third facelift for 1999. Both small and large technical improvements were made each year until 2002, when the R129 was succeeded by the R230. A total of 213,089 units of the R129 model were produced.
