Description

The current owner purchased the car on eBay in the USA in 2006 with the help of Door2Door (Anders Dalgren). The Corvette had been restored in the USA, and the previous owner mentioned that he received the car as payment for something and had not used it himself. The current owner believes this to be true, as the car was downright unsafe when it arrived in Sweden. The seller asked if the current owner wanted an extra engine (possibly the original 283) and the hardtop included with the purchase, which the buyer gladly accepted.

When the car arrived in Sweden, it was brutal—speed, acceleration, and sound. However, it had numerous mechanical issues, and it turned out that the engine, a 350 with fuel injection, was completely worn out. The extra engine that came with the Corvette was then rebuilt. There is extensive documentation on this, and it is included with the car. Among other things, the brake shoes were replaced because the ones installed were incorrect. The rear axle ratio was also changed, as the engine was revving too high during highway driving. Someone referred to the original ratio as the "climbing-the-mountains ratio." This original ratio is included separately with the car.

After some time, the owner replaced the fuel injection with a more reliable carburetor. Many parts, including the fuel injection system, are included as well (see pictures). The Corvette has been used sparingly for cruising and trips to buy ice cream in the Siljan area and has not been driven outside of this region during the current owner’s time with it.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Performs very well in engine and drivetrain. The V8 sounds as it should and the manual gearbox has good and clear gear stages. The braking system also feels and works well. The fuel gauge is showing incorrect and the speedometer is not working. It might be that the cable is disconnected.

  • Interior condition:

The interior is in very good condition overall. Clean, intact, and well-maintained. The dashboard appears to be in very good condition and the speedometer is calibrated in miles.

  • Exterior condition:

The paint job is professionally done, but there are some filler bubbles, mainly visible on the hood, the windshield wiper panel, and the top of the front fenders; see pictures. There is also a small crack in the hood that occurred during a minor accident when switching from injection to carburetor; read the description and see the picture. The convertible top is in fine condition. The hardtop that comes with it is in an unrestored condition. Underneath, the Corvette looks very good and clean.

  • General condition:

A Corvette in very good condition, even underneath it is in a very good and nice state. Ready to use car.

Facts about the model

In 1956, an upgraded body was introduced, renewing the appearance of the Corvette. In 1957, fuel injection developed by Rochester was offered as an option. This engine, with its volume increased to 283 in³ (4.6 L), delivered 283 hp (211 kW), making it one of the first engines in the world to produce one horsepower per cubic inch. In 1958, another body update was introduced, featuring many chrome details. Dual headlights and a "washboard" hood were among the new features. All this chrome made the 1958 model the heaviest of all first-generation Corvettes. The body remained largely unchanged until 1961 when the rear section was completely redesigned, hinting at what was to come in the next generation of Corvettes. The "Boat Tail" and the now-iconic quad taillights, which have been a staple on all Corvettes since 1961, were introduced.

1962 marked the final year of the first-generation Corvette, the C1. That year, engine displacement was increased to 327 in³ (5.4 L), and the most powerful fuel-injected version delivered a remarkable 360 hp (268 kW). The body was stripped of chrome, making this the "cleanest" design of the first-generation Corvettes. It was also the fastest, with the fuel-injected model accelerating from 0 to 96 km/h (0 to 60 mph) in just 5.9 seconds!
