"A simple and ingenious design for driving on poor roads, over rough terrain of all kinds. The original Willys Jeep was produced in large numbers during the 1940s. The car on offer, a CJ2A, is the civilian successor, mechanically equivalent to its predecessor. The car is exempt from inspection and fully ready to drive. We are not aware of anything that needs attention before putting it on the road."

Description

This Jeep has been on Gotland for more than 40 years, probably even longer. To be certain, however, one would have to check with the Swedish National Archives. The current owner acquired the car in 2021 from an acquaintance who had owned it for 38 years, and who had kept it off the road in the garage for the past 20 years. In 2025, the current owner removed the engine for a complete overhaul. In addition to the engine, the brakes were also reconditioned, and the entire car was gone over. Great care has been taken to achieve a well-functioning Jeep.
The Jeep is now ready to drive and is just waiting for a new owner. The car is being sold because the owner has more vintage vehicles in need of attention.
The car comes with only 1 ignition key. Owner's manual, jack, and spare wheel are missing.

This is a distance auction. Photos and information about the vehicle and its technical condition have been obtained from the owner. BWA has thus not inspected the car on site at the seller's location.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

Equipped with the Willys L134 engine, a four-cylinder 2.2-liter flathead producing 60 hp. The engine became best known by its nickname, the "Go Devil". The gearbox is a Borg-Warner T-90, a three-speed with non-synchronized 1st gear. And of course four-wheel drive, which was the hallmark of the Willys Jeep.

The engine was fully rebuilt in 2026. The block was bored .030, with new pistons, new bearings, new valve guides, new valves, new water pump, etc. The brake system has also been fully overhauled, with turned brake drums, new brake linings, new wheel cylinders, and more. New tires and a new fuel tank were also fitted in 2026. Runs very well in engine and drivetrain. See the video.

The only remark is slight oil seepage from the gearbox and engine, despite all gaskets being replaced in the engine during the rebuild. 6-volt electrical system. (The generator and voltage regulator come from a Volvo PV)

  • Interior condition

The seats are not original. This model of bucket-style aftermarket sport seats was popular during the 1970s and 1980s. The sport steering wheel also comes from the same period. All gauges in the instrumentation are functional. Otherwise, the interior is in normal condition for a CJ2A Jeep.

  • Exterior condition

The body is largely in original condition. Universal turn signals have been fitted both front and rear. The Jeep is equipped with Slottmags aluminum wheels, with new tires. This wheel type was extremely popular during the 1970s and 1980s. A roll bar has been retrofitted. The vehicle also comes with a custom-made soft top. There are a few spots of rust on the body, including at the fender braces. Nothing major, however, and no rust in the frame. See the photos. The vehicle was previously painted red. We do not know when the Jeep received its current color, most likely around 40 years ago.

  • General condition

Well-functioning Willys Jeep with a freshly rebuilt engine.

Owner's comment

I bought the Jeep from an acquaintance who had kept it in storage for many years. I thought it would be an interesting project to get the car running again. It was a truly nostalgic experience to wrench on it. It took a lot of work – among other things, we had to install a new fuel tank, clean out the fuel system, overhaul the brakes, and more. The big job was the complete engine rebuild. It now runs beautifully and will hopefully bring joy to its next owner. My wife is already happy to have one less car in the garage.

Facts about the model

The iconic original Jeep was built from 1941 to 1945. Both Willys Overland (MB) and Ford (GPW) built this light off-road vehicle for use by the Allied forces during World War II. Nearly 360,000 examples of the Willys MB were built, and approximately 278,000 examples left Ford's factories. They are four-wheel drive with a three-speed gearbox equipped with high and low range.

After the war, many were sold through surplus stocks around the world. The CJ2A model is the successor to the so-called "war Jeep." These were sold under the banner of the "Peace Jeep" from 1945 to 1953. The visible difference was the larger headlights, which were recessed, and fewer slats in the grille. In Sweden, they were used not only by the military, but also as tow trucks, fire engines, and in agriculture. Many remained in service for decades.

The rise of the four-wheel-drive off-road movement in Sweden:
During the late 1970s and early 1980s, the four-wheel-drive off-road movement began in Sweden, which came to develop into a popular hobby and organized movement. There was a large supply of older, rugged military vehicles, both older models of Volvo's off-road vehicles and Willys Jeeps, which enthusiasts bought up and drove through forests and fields. The movement gained its major media and unifying hub when the magazine 4 Wheel Drive was launched in 1983. The magazine quickly became a focal point for the hobby and helped spread the culture, coverage from meets, and technical tips across the entire country. The motorsport federations also began organizing official competition disciplines such as car trials, and local off-road clubs were formed at a rapid pace.

Today, the Swedish off-road movement has grown into a broad, modern, and very vibrant subculture.
Now the old military vehicles are sought-after collector's items. Instead, the meets are dominated by modern, well-equipped pickups and off-road vehicles such as the Toyota Land Cruiser, Jeep Wrangler, Ford Ranger, and Isuzu D-Max.
