"A fairly untouched car with many original parts specific to the 123 GT remaining."

Description

This Volvo Amazon 123 GT is a fine example of a car that has retained its original character over the years. The car is mostly original and the odometer reads approximately 67,000 km. The owner states that the car wears its original paint, but I believe I can detect some differences in shade. The car is a Volvo 133351 M, with identity number 221249, a B18 engine, and electronic overdrive.

Over the years, the car has picked up a few traces of its history. After running off the road into a ditch in Vilhelmina in the 1980s, the side mirrors were moved to a more modern position. In the 1970s, a carburetor fire left a mark in the paint on the hood. That same decade, the tachometer was stolen during a car break-in. The incident is unusually well documented, with papers from the legal proceedings and the verdict of six months in prison for the perpetrator. The documents accompany the car. The tachometer was returned and is also included. It is precisely these kinds of details that make an older car personal and full of life.

Here is a preserved Amazon with a history spanning several decades. Small traces of the past remain, but they add to the car's authenticity and bear witness to a long life.

The car comes with some loose spare parts and a fuel can that fits in the spare wheel well, see photos.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

At the time of inspection, the engine would only run with full choke. When the choke was pushed in, the engine did not run cleanly. A carburetor overhaul and adjustment, and possibly an overhaul of the ignition system, will likely be needed. According to the owner, the overdrive works. The brakes engage well and evenly.

  • Interior condition

The interior is in somewhat worn condition with signs of age and use, see photos. It is functional as is, and for those who wish, there is potential for improvement.

  • Exterior condition

The paint is in acceptable condition with some minor blemishes, see photos. The body has a few small dents, and the undercarriage looks as expected on a Volvo that is nearly 60 years old. The chrome trim is likewise in used condition with signs of age.

  • General condition

A sought-after Amazon 123 GT in usable condition with potential for improvement. The body appears solid. The car runs as is, but the engine would benefit from an overhaul and service.

Facts about the model

When Volvo introduced the Amazon 123 GT in 1967, it was intended for those who could not afford an 1800S – or perhaps needed a more practical yet sporty car. The new GT was based on the two-door Amazon. The gearbox was the same four-speed with Overdrive.

The 123 GT was equipped with, among other things, dual mirrors on the fenders, Hella fog and driving lights, trim rings, a tachometer on the dashboard and a three-spoke sports steering wheel, radial tires, a high-tone horn, chrome folding fittings, as well as lighting in the engine compartment and trunk.

The 123 GT was without a doubt the most expensive Amazon. In 1967, when the cheapest Favorit model with a three-speed gearbox cost 15,300 kronor, a 123 GT went for a full 18,800 kronor.

During 1967, the Volvo Amazon was Sweden's best-selling car model, but during the second half of the year it was overtaken by the new 142 and 144.

In 1968, the Amazon 123 GT disappeared from the Swedish market, followed by the station wagon the year after. The last Amazon was built in the summer of 1970.
