"A Royal Enfield manufactured in India, carrying much of the engineering and aura of the British motorcycle industry and its golden age. It may not quite measure up to today's modern motorcycles, but it wins on charm and raw reliability. It appears to be a low-mileage example that has been sparingly ridden and may therefore need a service and some attention."

Description

This bike was first registered for road use on June 25, 2004. The current owner has had it since the beginning of September. He has had a wiring harness looked over and has ridden it a little, but is now selling it on due to relocation, among other things. The odometer now reads 5,240 km, and looking back at the odometer readings at inspection dates, this may well be the correct mileage. Considering the condition, this is not implausible. It has changed owners relatively frequently and has mostly been in storage, by all appearances.

The bike comes with rearview mirrors, chrome turn signals, and foot pegs. It is inspected and ready to ride.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

Started with the kick starter (electric start is fitted) and the engine ran well. It has a completely different character than modern motorcycles. Not test ridden by us, but the owner rode a couple of laps and it appeared to run well and sounded solid. The engine sound and aura are impressive. It is uncertain how it has been serviced in recent years, so a thorough check with a service is recommended. Reportedly, everything works as it should. Last inspected in July of this year.

  • Interior condition

The "Limpan" is in nice, "never-sat-on" condition, the handle and the gauge are in good condition and appear to work well.

  • Exterior condition

May be in original condition, and the paintwork is in fine condition. The same goes for the other details. Fine wheels and tires, of uncertain age. The nut/lock for one of the hubcaps has been lost; it is inadequately taped.

  • General condition

This bike was a classic the very day it left the factory. Built around a classic concept with certain upgrades, but should still be regarded as an enthusiast vehicle. Only a trickle have made their way here from the factory in India. A motorcycle for those who want to be relatively alone with their machine at meets and events. There, you are sure to attract attention.

Facts about the model

Royal Enfield began manufacturing motorcycles in England in 1893 and is the world's oldest marque in continuous production. It started when two partners, Walker-Smith and Eadie, bought a company that manufactured bicycles and sewing machines. They came to produce precision parts for the government arms manufacturer Royal Small Arms Factory in Enfield. Following that contract, they named their company Royal Enfield and adopted a cannon as their logo. They successfully continued manufacturing motorcycles before, during, and after the First World War. In 1932, they introduced the iconic Royal Enfield Bullet, a model still in production today. They also began assembling the Bullet in India in 1949 through the Madras Motor Company, and from 1955 motorcycles were manufactured under the name Enfield India. The original company in England went bankrupt around 1970 as the Japanese motorcycle industry made its triumphant march around the world. The marque lived on in India, however. When new owners, Eicher Ltd, took over in 1999, the original Royal Enfield name was also acquired. Since then, the motorcycles have been sold under the classic name. The 500 ES is a bike built in the traditional style, with ES standing for Electric Start.
