"A rare and somewhat worn eighties youngtimer classic, spiced with period performance-oriented German engineering and plastic body skirts."

Description

It was registered for road use in Sweden in November 1987. The owner who purchased the car in 1996 kept it for more than 28 years and did not drive it much. Or at all. According to the registry, it appears he took the car off the road shortly after the purchase in June 1996, and it is currently difficult to verify this information with the previous owner. In any case, the current owner, the foundation Minnenas Museum, had the car inspected last year, on 2025-07-04. Today the odometer reading – after adding one full turn of the odometer – is 124,250 km.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

The engine has a rebuilt cylinder head with a new timing belt and water pump. The engine runs nicely together with the gearbox and clutch. A new fuel tank has also been fitted along with new brakes and a master brake cylinder.

  • Interior condition

Good interior that would benefit from reconditioning. The seats don't say Recaro, but they look like the Recaro seats fitted in the sportier Kadetts and Mantas of the eighties. Minor entry wear on the left side of the driver's seat. Nice door panels and headliner; the manual sunroof needs a little help opening, but it closes, opens, and seals properly.

  • Exterior condition

Original paint with blemishes and visible surface rust in several places, but no serious corrosion. The areas behind the plastic skirts are, for natural reasons, difficult to inspect. Original alloy wheels with older tires.

  • General condition

For an Opel enthusiast with a taste for the brand's special versions, this is an affordable opportunity. The dull paint, minor damage, and surface rust can also be seen as a kind of untouched provenance worth preserving.

Facts about the model

1988 was the final production year for the Opel Ascona C before the model was retired and replaced by the Opel Vectra. Through a close collaboration with Irmscher, the otherwise rather ordinary family car received a sporty and exclusive farewell gift. During the eighties, the Ascona C (the front-wheel-drive generation) was a sales success for Opel, but the model suffered from a reputation as somewhat sensible and dull. To remedy this, and to celebrate the model's last gasp, special versions were launched with Irmscher providing the refinement. Since the seventies, Irmscher had served as Opel's unofficial purveyor of performance and styling, rooted in successes in the World Rally Championship.
For the 1988 model, the Irmscher packages were primarily about giving the Ascona a more aggressive appearance and improved handling. The cars were equipped with relatively discreet and effective body kits, a deeper front spoiler with integrated fog lights, and a characteristic wing on the trunk lid. The chassis was lowered with stiffer suspension, along with Irmscher's iconic alloy wheels (often in a "cross-spoke" design).
Inside, there were sport seats, a sport steering wheel, and other details that lifted the interior above the standard car's gray plasticky feel.
Mechanically, the 1988 Irmscher versions were based on Opel's lively 2.0i GT engine (C20NE) with electronic fuel injection and a catalytic converter, producing around 115 horsepower – still a respectable figure for its time in a relatively light car. Certain special-order variants and aftermarket kits from Irmscher also offered a reworked cylinder head with sharper camshafts for even more power.
